Here’s some of what i’ve narrowed it down to.
-HK416/417
-SCAR H/L
-knights armament PDW
Note: I am not a gamer and have never played call of duty in my life.
Note: We shouldn’t use the 5.56(x45) anymore, we need to get into something between the light/weak 5.56 and the heavy/powerful 7.62mm. maybe the 6mm or the 6.8mm.
Good point aden, if we replace the m4, it needs to be something more reliable if we can’t change the caliber.

The military has been looking at the next generation rifle and caliber. Where does the 6.5 rank in the competition?

Well, so me and a friend have been shooting high caliber scoped rifles since we were like 7. I’m almost out of HS, and I don’t have a good financial opportunity. I have really always wanted to be a sniper, for the challenge of long ranges of like a mile or two. I want to know EVERYTHING that I might need to know about becoming a sniper. Body (Eye sight, Hearing, physical fitness), Mind (right frame of mind) everything. I really would love to be one, but I need to know everything, please help

Please give me your honest recommendation… I’m looking for a high caliber, surplus field rifle that would also function as a big game hunting rifle. I’ve been considering the G3A3 (or HK41) but these are way too expensive for a 22 year old rural Coloradoan… Recommendations?
As a side-note, I’m cross-eye dominant, so I’m leaning towards a semi-automatic as opposed to a bolt-action.

Guns technically have not much other purpose than to hunt or to harm people (out of self-defense or out of intent to physically harm). But in reality its just a tool. Guns don’t kill people, people kill people. A knife and a car could do the same thing. It might be a really redundant tool since it has no actual real life (non-violent) application besides hunting. But I still believe that guns should be legalized. Definitely not military grade small arms such as assault rifles or explosives or incendiary rounds, that should be left to the military and law enforcement.
But however I think the American gun owning populace, should really tone down the fanaticism on the type or caliber of guns they own. They don’t need an automatic AK or 50. Cal Barrett or a Silenced UZI to go hunting deer or practice shooting or home defense. That’s absolutely absurd, that’s just the machismo of the American gun-owning man, proving they have the bigger gun.
Guns are tools, and their purpose is to even the playing field. Where a 50 (5ft) kg woman can be on even terms with a 140 (6’5ft) kg criminal. I’m saying that everyone should have guns, but everyone in the right mind should have the option to have one. It’s only the stupidity and violent people in a community that can make those who guns look bad.
I’m absolutely for banning explosives (unless it’s useful in a required field), fully automatic and silenced weapons to general public but I still think people should have rights to firearm ownership and reduce the firearms allowed to no more that 3 per person. I myself own a Sig Sauer P226 40. which I shoot and the range and clean regularly. But I will never understand the kind of person that owns a 100 round AK47 and goes around blowing up propane tanks or uses a Barrett 50. Cal to hunt deer. You don’t need a chainsaw to cut your sandwich or taking a taxi to get somewhere a block away. Thanks just irresponsible and simply overdoing it. Like I said, guns are merely a tool for defense or hunting (maybe competitive marksmanship, but that doesn’t have any real day to day life value).

For example, when the state of New Jersey wanted to ban the .50 BMG (pretty much a military caliber) to cut down on gun violence…also tried to slip in blackpowder muzzleloading firearms. NJ tried to ban them based on caliber size, when, in fact, blackpowder muzzleloading firearms of any caliber are not used to commit crimes. In addition, the .50 BMG had never been used in the state of New Jersey to commit any type of crime ? Honest mistake, or deliberate attempt to pull the wool over our eyes ?

I have an old military rifle that a friend of mine wants to buy. My dad gave me the rifle a few years ago, and I searched the web for info but really didn’t get any where and the gun has been in the back of my safe since then. This is what is stamped on it.
1954
The manufacture looks like RPR with leaves on both sides of the initials
It has a folding bayonet
It is a bolt action with a fixed bottom dump magazine
It has a signal marker with a triangle surrounding it also stamped on it
Any ideas on what I have?
Added: I have not found any other markings other than the serial number (all but the bolt match) also unknown is the caliber.
Thanks for the help

Now as far as the cartridge is concerned and the choice of game being medium game, how can i be sure to choose the right bullet so I don’t end up "limited" to deer only for instance. I know the .270 shoots a flatter trajectory at longer ranges which is good, but the 270 ammo vs the 308 is more expensive.
So could i hunt the same kinds of animals with either or these bullets? and if i wanted to hunt elk or moose which caliber would be the better bet for my ticket? A 30-06 is not for me.
These are the two rifles im currently looking at.
REMINGTON 700 ADL .270 RIFLE
349.99
And
WEATHERBY VG1 .308 RIFLE
399.99
Ive read that both cartiridges can be "limiting". Im referring to these statements.
"I would buy a Remington 700 SPS, but in 308 caliber and not 30-06. No need to limit yourself on the bullet weights available for 30-06 when you can have a more varied number of different styles and bullet weights in 308. "

"I’d go with the 270, mainly because it may give you a little more flexibility in the future. It would make a much better antelope gun if you ever choose to hunt those, and has probably taken as many elk as any round out there."
Now to rationalize is this a discussion. Is this something similiar to a .38 spl and a .357 discussion in thinking of terms of, experience, shooting, other training factors etc etc? Or what?
Weatherby imports?? Hadnt heard anything on that.. Oh one more thing. Ive also heard Weatherby rifles ONLY shoot Weatherby ammunition? Did i hear this right?
Your answers have been a great addition to all of the information i’ve collected thus far. Kudos to YOU guys!

i was thinking about this the other day, so figure you are going to want something that can reliably defend you from anything (bears, humans etc.) so it has to be a high powered caliber. second a semi auto rifle( ak-47, ar-15 etc.) need a magazine to function. what if you lose or break that magazine, then you have to load one round at a time, compared to the bolt action rifle that has an internal magazine that cant be lost. and lastly most military rifles were designed with the idea of hand to hand combat in mind, so they can be equipped with bayonets. Just tell me what you think and if you agree or disagree with me

Say the military was looking for a new caliber to use in their presision rifles, which I think .308 is best, but… 25-06 or 7mm-08, which do you think they would choose?
Why do you say .243?

Currently the standard issue sidearm for the US Military is the Beretta M9, chambered in the 9×19 cartridge. The military switched to the beretta after decades of using the Colt M1911-A1, chambered in the .45 ACP cartridge. Ballistically, the .45 was superior, although the military believed it to be logistically impractical, and opted for the 9mm in the less tested beretta.
Every Military serviceman I’ve talked with have called the M9 a piece of crap or worse, and I haven’t found the weapon itself to be particularly appealing, much less the round it fires. Add to that, the 9×19 isn’t particularly effective either, at least not in an FMJ, and expanding ammunition is illegal in war. Logistically speaking, it would be less expensive and be a great help on the battlefield to retire an outdated weapon that is as ready for combat as a newborn, and replace it with a polymer pistol of a more effective caliber
So, what weapon and caliber would you like to see the US Military adopt? Personally, I would like to see a return to the .45 in a Glock 21. A .45 is one of the only handgun rounds that can stop a threat with one, maybe two decent shots even with an FMJ round, aside from a .44 magnum or .50 AE, however a desert eagle is a little bit much. I also would be open to a Glock 31, which is the full sized Glock in .357 SIG. The Glock is the top choice for law enforcement here and abroad. It is standard issue for most federal agencies and is combat ready out of the box. It has a .5 inch trigger reset, compared to the much longer and heavier pull of an M9. As well as the fact that the Glock is arguably the most versatile and indestructable firearm on the planet.
And yes, i am a little biased as I carry a Glock 22 (.40 S&W) everyday, and it’s never failed me. I would especially like to hear from military personnel.
Oh, and if you’re firearm and combat experience comes from Call of Duty, go somewhere else, shooting a CGI created weapon on a tv does not count.
NOTE: I realize the M9 has been replaced by the M4 for marines under the rank of colonel although I think that every person in combat ought to have a secondary weapon, regardless of corps policy.
I also like the 1911 and own one, however I will not own a kimber, I have no incentive to pay 2 grand for a weapon that I can get for a fraction of the price with rock island or a Springfield.
The Glock may not be pretty but it WILL go BANG everytime you pull the trigger as well as hold twice the rounds and half the weight.
2nd Note: the 9×19 and .45 are not comparable and I don’t believe you’ll find any experienced shooter who will say they are. It’s like comparing apples to…cattle. Yes the muzzle energy is greater but the argument that a smaller, lighter bullet is superior to a larger, heavier one doesn’t fly. And no, the 9mm does not create the same wound as a .45, not even close. You should research before making claims. I have never seen anybody taken down with one center-of-mass shot with a 9mm, I have seen/heard of dozens where a huge guy was taken out with one shot the chest with a .45.

Something like the L85 or AUG. Maybe one with a heavier round like the 6.8 mm Remington.
Also, I don’t play video games so don’t call this a CoD question.
I am talking about the next 10 or so years.
I don’t think money should be considered much of a concern as we do account for about half of the worlds total military spending at 700 billion US dollars
Xeno, I believe you mean XM-8 as I can find no references to MX-8 anywhere, and that is neither bullpup nor .308 caliber, this may not be a CoD question but that was a CoD answer.
What?, Thats not what I meant, we have the best funded military the world over, if we want to switch to a bullpup rifle we can even if it does cost a bit more than an M16. China, the UK, Australia, and France have all switched and all have much less funding than we do.
Also, sarcasm sure as hell isn’t going to help illustrate your point, its just so f*cking annoying.

I have the infamous package deal Remington 710 with the synthetic all-weather stock, steel bolt action, Bushnell Sharpshooter 3-9x40mm optics, with a .270 caliber barrel. I had bought a bi-pod for it, a camouflage sling, and the only ammunition I use for it is Federal Premium Boat-tails 130g soft point. I have experience in this weapon. I had shot my first deer between two ribs, through the liver, then the heart and in between two vertebrae of the spinal column between 225 yards away in kneeling position based on what I observed when I cleaned him. ( That may not seem far but it was my first hunt. ) If it isn’t suitable, what do I need to change on it? I am trying to get a good rifle out of my .270 for long distance target shooting.

Guns have different calibers. Is it more humane, in your opinion, to use smaller or a larger caliber?
If you only want points, go away and GTFO!
If your military or a police officer, I wouldn’t mind to know your opinion, since your life is on the line via situation. Also, I understand if you don’t wish to answer so do whatever is best for you.
No asshole. There’s really no such thing, but you do have your tazers, pepper spray, or even rubber bullets or w/e!
Guns are your tools of death; sorry for your history of such. Non-lethal means are your Pepper spray, tazers, and whatever those rubber rounds are used in prisons and stuff.
Word of advice if you don’t know how your Y/A works. Don’t insult the asker. You don’t get anywhere. Not chatting, was asked to clarify my words and great example of your proper ways to ask for clarification. Thanks Bernice. Are you a troll tosser. One that insults a asker. Is this how you want to explain your sad, dear lord how much can I say: existence.
Dam! I’m a vet too, but my branch went to your .40 for a reason in comparison to just a .9 mil. I’m thinking practical. One shot is your center mass. If that doesn’t stop them. The second there not coming up for; since it’s fatal!

I am interested in getting a rifle, more for long range target shooting than hunting. I’m thinking .308 or .338 Lapua. Any comments on Caliber and/or grain would be most welcome.
I have shot plenty before, but haven’t done much long range shooting with a scope. My question is, if I get a rifle like a Remington 700, or a Ruger M77 Hawkeye, should I be able to hit targets beyond 1,000 yds? I believe that it’s the shooter not the gun that makes the difference.
Any advice on ammo, optics, technique, or rifles is welcome!
Thanks!

This is a follow up question to my question about how teed off the liberals are that people are buying up all the assault rifles they can before another ban.
And before I go one, gun owners do have a legitimate worry, as the first thing Bill Clinton did was enact a ban on semi-automatic scary-looking guns, aka "assault rifles".
Are you buying what you can now, before a possible ban?
Here are two links to some seriously cool looking rifles. One is a semi-automatic AK, that is really nice. The other is the semi-automatic version of the military’s new Kriss .45 caliber submachine gun. It is one sweet looking rifle. Definitely a must for any gun collection.
