Do you get gun rights/licenses after honorable Military service?

March 20th, 2011 by eranio

I’ve always wondered the answer to this question… If you have served in the U.S. Military and completed your service HONORABLY, do you get licenses that might be difficult for civilians to obtain for yourself? (Like the right to own/carry a handgun, last time i checked that was REALLY hard to obtain). It would make sense, right? You trained with one, you know about all the safety, you are a gun expert, you know how to do anything with one, and you were trusted with one in the defense of this nation. It just seems right. And does honorable military service also grant you the right/license to own a rifle/shotgun? I know you can’t keep your guns that you were issued because they are property of the U.S. Government, but can you be given to go off after your service and by your own guns (Handguns and Rifles/Shotguns)?

Man with M16 rifle will always win battle against man with handguns?

February 10th, 2011 by eranio

M16 rifle vs handguns.
Even Military police with handgun would lose fight against guy with M16 ?
Isn`t it impossible to fight against man with large rifle by handguns?
Handguns and shotguns can`t shoot that far, and it takes time to shoot 1 bullet.

Who would win ? guy with AK47 , MP5 or M16 ? IF they were all well trained soldiers.

If I live on a military base, can I keep my personal firearm off base in a storage unit?

December 28th, 2010 by eranio

I’m thinking about joining the Navy and I’m wondering what I should do with my handguns. In the Navy are you allowed to keep them in the base armory? Can I store them off base in one of those self-storage places?
EDIT: I figured it would be a hassle getting them in and out of the Armory, that’s why I originally thought of the storage unit idea. I know that humidity would cause rust issues, I was planning on getting a climate controlled unit, or using a dehumidifier.
EDIT #2: Maybe I’ll just sell them and then buy another one when I get out. Thing is I’m going to get a concealed carry permit and I was hoping that I could hold onto them so I could carry while I was on leave, but I don’t want to have to inform my CO that I’m doing so.

Is every person in the military taught to shoot?

December 7th, 2010 by eranio

Stupid question probably, but let’s face it, many soldiers aren’t ever going to see combat. So are all soldiers taught to shoot rifles and handguns?

Can any gun enthusiast give me a good reason why anyone needs an assault rifle or SAW?

November 9th, 2010 by eranio

This is a serious question. I can’t for the life of me think why anyone would need what is essentially a machine gun. Handguns or hunting rifles I can understand. But AKs etc?
jimmy f; yes, but TVs and cars have a specific purpose, ie to entertain/provide transport. An assault rifle has one purpose, to kill people. Lots of them. So why do you need one?
trigunmarksman; I wonder if the US troops being shot at in Iraq would agree that a well armed society is a good thing?

Is cal. .40 S&W a good choice for a combat carbine?

November 4th, 2010 by eranio

Generally I wouldn’t consider a carbine (pistol ammo) for combat use because of limited range and stopping power. However I have found several manufacturers producing .40 S&W assault style firearms and they interest me because they utilize their corresponding pistols magazines. Since the biggest complaint I’ve heard from those not liking the .40 S&W in a pistol is that it has too high a velocity and long range for close combat (police say stray rounds can travel too far or bullet tends to go through target), I’m wondering if the effective range might not be even greater fired through a rifle barrel thus making it a serious choice to consider in an assault rifle. Please only experienced shooters with knowledge of .40 S&W ballastics reply.

(this may be miscategorized but thought I’d get better responses in military)
I thought it might be good if already owning a .40 pistol to have a carbine that utilized the same ammo and magazines.
Betterdead…just tried your link and get this message…I wonder why:

What's a good way to learn to hunt?

November 4th, 2010 by eranio

I’m in my 20s, enlisted military, and own and have been firing and maintaining both compound bows, rifles, and handguns since I was a kid. I would like to learn how to hunt. Apparently, the only failure is that I’m also female, so I don’t get invited along, as my friends’ hunting excursions are guys only. I don’t have a big family to ask.

Any ideas? Female hunters? Are there sporting clubs that would take me?

Silver Stars without Champagne: Why is the legal drinking age 21?

October 27th, 2010 by eranio

In the United State, citizens get more rights as they get older: When one turns 16, they can get a provisional drivers license. At 18, they become "legal adults" and they get the right to buy firearms (but not handguns), pornography, tobacco, spray paint, lottery tickets, and most importantly, the right to vote and the right to serve in the military.

Now why is it that an 18 year old can join the military, recieve Silver Stars and Purple Hearts for valor in combat, but cant come home and go to a bar in downtown Washington, DC? How come the US government can trust the 18-21 age group with owning firearms, bearing the burden on defending freedom, and choosing the nation’s leaders but can’t trust them with the responsibilty of drinking alcohol? What is the reasoning behing this logic and why did the US government change the law back in the 70′s from 18 to 21? Why did the government feel they had to hold federal highway funds from states that didn’t obey?
And for all the morons who don’t know anything about anything… Purple Hearts are awarded for being WOUNDED in combat, not necessarily dying (but you do get one for that, too) My 83 year old grandfather and former 101st Airborne paratrooper recieved two.

The question is why can an 18 year old enlist in the Marines, serve 2 tours in Iraq, get his arm blown off, and not be able to come back home and have a drink? Why am I able to choose the leaders of my country but not be able to have a drink? Doesn’t it seem to you that the legal drinking age is suspiciously misplaced when compared to the more serious right you get when you are younger?

What should my next gun purchase be?

October 17th, 2010 by eranio

More of an opinion question really but I really want some advice on what my next gun should be. I currently have three Remington 870′s (2×12 Gauge Super Magnums, one 20 gauge), a Norinco SKS, and Remington 700 in .270 with an older Leupold Vari-X scope hanging on my bedroom wall. I’m nineteen years old and live in Virginia. The only guns that technically belong to me are the SKS and the 20 gauge 870. The rest all belong to my dad and I hunt occasionly and have all my duck, rabbit, squirrel, and whitetail needs covered.

My question is what type of firearm should I get that is under 0-0 in price. I enjoy all kinds of shooting but am most experienced with shooting milsurp rifles and 100-200 yard hunting and target shooting. I was strongly considering picking up a Mosin Nagant just for the sake of adding to my ComBloc collection of military rifles. Next would be the AK which i could potentially get both for 0, 100 for the Mosin and 500 for the AK. I have also flipped around the idea of a Springfield XD or shelling out the big bucks and building my own AR for 00. I’m open to any suggestions from those of you who have a favorite gun or have faced a similar situation as me.
Also in VA it’s legal for me to posses a handgun just not to purchase one. My dad would be more than willing to buy me any handgun I wanted and I have numerous friends I could have buy me ammo. So handguns are part of the picture as well
I cannot afford to pay 10,000 dollars plus all the title II paper work and the 200 dollar tax stamp for an M16 and as much as I love the SCAR-H i believe they cost about 2,500 to 3000 dollars. Remember 0-0
I have six 22lr’s. A pump action, a semi auto rifle, two bolt actions, and for pistols a revolver and an automatic. Also no more shotguns
Seth just reminded me I’m also very interested in a marlin lever action or any other brand someone can recommend

How many crimes are actually committed in the US using an 'assault' rifle? I can't remember seeing many news?

October 2nd, 2010 by eranio

stories of crimes involving the use of assault rifles. Handguns, yes, but rarely an assault rifle. But my memory isn’t infallible. If you know of some, please tell me, or give me a site that lists them.

This arose because I thought the amount of effort spent debating about banning assault rifles was disproportionate to their actual use in crimes, including crazy shooting sprees. So for the purposes of this question, please do not include hunting rifles or shotguns. That’s a larger question.

Thanks.

What exactly is John Lott, the author of "More Guns, Less Crime" trying to say in this paragraph?

August 29th, 2010 by eranio

"Fortunately, despite many news stories to the contrary, our government has taken a much more sensible approach than outright banning guns. Iraqis are able to keep weapons up to AK-47s in their home or business and are able to carry guns with them with a permit. These AK-47s are real military machine guns, not the semi-automatic versions that fire only one bullet per trigger pull and are banned from being sold in our country by the 1994 so-called assault-weapons ban. Yet, despite Iraqis owning machine guns and the country still not under control, Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld pointed out that Baghdad is experiencing fewer murders than Washington, DC, where handguns are banned."

What is really being said about America here? That even a war-torn nation full machine gun toting "terrorists" is safer than America? Or that America should be more like Iraq?

Are ex-military in the UK allowed to keep service weapons?

August 23rd, 2010 by eranio

A little question that popped into my mind watching Sherlock, I was under the impression handguns were illegal unless you were part of a police force or something similar.

In as few words as possible, what do you think should be the law(s) about GUN CONTROL in the USA?

July 30th, 2010 by eranio

Guns for sport and hunting by license and rigorous background check only. Lots of rules about when they can be used, how to store them, etc.

Harsh penalties for misuse.

No guns for criminals!

No high powered military assault rifles. No machine guns.

Handguns should also have severe limits.

What’s your take on this?

Can i buy military weapons .?

July 25th, 2010 by eranio

Hi im from New York City and i know my city has very large restrictions to gun-holders ; Mostly because of gang and criminal crimes and violence . Now im not trying to buy a light machine gun such as (M249 SAW ). Im looking to purchase things such as sub machine guns , handguns sniper rifles , assault rifles to collect such as ( MAC-10 , Dragunov SUV , UZI , M1911, Knight Hawk) can they be sold to civilians with proper licensing or are they illegal .
oh and yes it would be good to add i have no criminal record , i am clean paperwise .

Why do people think guns are illegal in the UK?

July 13th, 2010 by eranio

We just do not have a right to bear arms here. Only certain types of firearms are outlawed such as handguns, semi-automatic, pump-action centre fire rifles, military weapons firing explosive ammunition, short shotguns that had magazines, and both elevated pump-action and self-loading rifles.

But you can obtain other firearms as long as you have a license. The catch is that it must be hard to get this license as you must have a very good reason and self protection can not be one of them. I’m guessing the elite easily gain these licenses.

Doesn't the individual right to own guns alleviate the need for consription for the following reason?

July 5th, 2010 by eranio

Why have a draft when in the worst case scenario(the military effort fails overseas and the enemy invades America) we would have 100 million people along with the military repelling an invasion?
They haven’t reinstated the draft but this is a hypothetical question.
William F, it’s both.
Vote, Germany had a school shooting and what makes you think people should only be limited to shot guns and handguns to defend the homeland?

Sorry if I’m making too much sense.

Is shooting experience required before enlisting to become a sniper?

June 28th, 2010 by eranio

I’ve been wanting to be a sniper since I was little, but I’ve only gotten around to firing a firearm when I was 18, and even then it was in small amounts. (Mostly because it was pistols and handguns, I prefer rifles. And I have the nuisance of being right handed while left eye dominant). Though I’m working on getting practice in my own time, I am wondering if the military does a kind of training course for beginning shooters.

What do Americans look for in a handgun?

June 18th, 2010 by eranio

It could be you personally, but I would like to know what have historically been the features of handguns that make them preferred by the military, law enforcement, and your average firearm owner. I’m looking for things like, "pointablitity", balance, weight, concealment, cost, reliability, consistency, ease of maintenance, maybe the ability to customize. What has really sold it to the American public, and why?
Thanks everyone, keep them coming!! I’m not so much looking for a handgun personally, as the best overall balance of all the traits and what balance has made a gun popular historically.

What do you think of older guns?

May 6th, 2010 by eranio

I like older mail order/kitchen door guns and older military guns. I just started getting into single shots and older guns. I know what to look at when buying them and how to check to see if there safe to fire. I had my eyes on a Spanish Imperial in .38 Special after handling it, It had way to much play in cylinder didn’t function in SA sometimes and trigger was way to lose and needed parts that would have had to be custom made. I asked what other handguns they had around 0. He said since he knows I have a thing for old guns I would feel like I was at a history convention. I was soon looking at a counter full of old top break revolvers from yester year in .32 S&W and .38 S&W. Most where Iver Johnson/US Revolvers with a one H&R and one S&W. After a few minutes I had a Iver Johnson third model top break in .38 set a side for my dad to pick up on Saturday. I put my the S&W and H&R and a .32 Iver hammerless on my list. Any ways why do people not have and interest or like these guns? I mean all these new tactical guns the have in the show room but if they know you enough you can go in the back room or corner behind the counter and dig threw military rifles. There are great prices like a unissued MAS 36 for 0 and a K-31 for 5 these took a while to get off the shelf I guess just me and a few collectors are interested in them but these AK and AR style rifles along with the new plastic pistol or anything "tacti-cool" flies off the shelf. They have a basement full of older shotguns and rifles that just gather dust down there. I mean I once seen a guy interested in a Winchester 1200 and was offered a Ted Williams 200 for less but he payed the extra money for a Winchester logo and chipped stock. I mean why not give the attention to these old guns they deserve? I’ll admit most of them are out dated but we wouldn’t be where were at with out them. Most of these were every where and highly advertised. You might say single shot shotguns for example are a dime a dozen. I look like each one of those has a different story and unique in there own way. If those guns could talk about there travels and all they saw I could listen day in and out. I see AR rifles and tacti-cool guns as bland and underneath those thirty pounds of accessories there all the same.

Any way what is your personal view on these older/mail order guns? I’m pretty interested to the answers here.

Guns – Which fire underwater? If you shoot into water from land, how far down does the average bullet go?

April 4th, 2010 by eranio

I understand that there are thousands of kinds of guns, but do all, most or just a few fire underwater? How about if you fire into the water, what generally happens to the bullet? Does it go far into the water, bounce off, angle off, or what? I am more interested in handguns/ military weapons rather than shotguns/heavy artilary.
