I get why we have rifles for hunters,i get hand guns for protection (although i’m not a fan of them) But tell me why we need military style assault weapons in the hands of citizens?
I’m pretty much only a fan of rifles/shot guns for hunting or protection in the home. It’s kind of scary knowing that people everywhere are walking around the street with hand guns or own military style weapons.
LOL @ whip that was a pathetic answer! No one needs automatic military style weapons unless you’re breaking the laws that barely hold this country together
I support the right to bare arms but not military assault "spray the area" type of weapons
this isn’t the old days the government isn’t going to come after you and murder you and your family for not paying your taxes….. there’s no need for them

I ask because there are some people that use the term to describe a type of weapon (the same way you would call a Colt SAA a revolver or the M1 Garand a semi-automatic rifle).
I’ve always understood the term to mean a rifle used by the military, as opposed to a hunting or sporting rifle.

Guns for sport and hunting by license and rigorous background check only. Lots of rules about when they can be used, how to store them, etc.
Harsh penalties for misuse.
No guns for criminals!
No high powered military assault rifles. No machine guns.
Handguns should also have severe limits.
What’s your take on this?

I am interested in getting a rifle, more for long range target shooting than hunting. I’m thinking .308 or .338 Lapua. Any comments on Caliber and/or grain would be most welcome.
I have shot plenty before, but haven’t done much long range shooting with a scope. My question is, if I get a rifle like a Remington 700, or a Ruger M77 Hawkeye, should I be able to hit targets beyond 1,000 yds? I believe that it’s the shooter not the gun that makes the difference.
Any advice on ammo, optics, technique, or rifles is welcome!
Thanks!

You can break in down in details like military, civilian defense and hunting, handguns, rifles, but I want to know the all time, most circulated mass produced firearm ever.

6 years ago I got in fight with a guy starting issues with my brother. We were all partying at this local spot. This guy starts pushing my brother. My brother is small and weak. This guy thought he was going to beat him up, so I stepped in. I ended up breaking his jaw and kicking him in the head until he was unconscious. He had a Caucasian, fractured check bone, broken jaw and needed stitches to close his eye brow. Then his girlfriend came over and started hitting me while I was kicking him. I smacked her on her butt and laughed at her. So I got indecent assault too. Yes if I could go back I would not have done this. I was drinking and out of control. I never got another charge and have not drank for years. I have been talking to this recruiter and he says that he can get a waiver for that since it was all I had on my record. I went and tried to buy a rifle not too long ago for hunting. I was denied because of my record, yet I can join the military and it does not matter? I am confused about PA gun laws. Does this mean I can never own a firearm in PA? If I do decide to join the military after I am finished can I own a firearm for hunting? Makes no sense to me.
I was not against my brother. It was the guy trying to fight my brother.

As a matter of national defense! Not a draft, but a working mandatory law that required defense training that would help curtail street crime and home invasions, that seem to spike in this last decade. When israel was again established in 1948, women and men were in the fields with weapons at their side. The madia failes to report the many times people saved themselves and others with a weapon at their access, a lot of times not even have to use it, or fire upon the bad guys. Let’s face reality, these are perilous times we live in. We were able to take hunting safety courses in school, and bring guns into the shop classes to get practical credit, cleaning and maintaining them. Are we too immature to do this now?
Fay! Wake up!! The thugs have the advantage now, you are probably a bleeding heart liberal.
Cos! the criminal would be denied the weopons as is the status now, we can deny them the training now as well, as it is now the military denies these scumbags the honor!

I’m trying to zero the scope on my airsoft sniper rifle. Most of the BB’s I shoot are going to the right of and higher than where im aiming, the trouble is, my scope is set as far as it will go down and to the left. Any suggestions? Thanks!
I knew I’d get more (not to mention alot better) answers if I put this in the Hunting category. Thanks everyone! And yes, I know that’s not where this question belongs, but your answers helped, thanks!

if i’m not mistaken in the military they give you your weapons (infantry, scouts, snipers etc), so if you’re a sniper, or an infantryman and after 8-12 years you retire can you keep you’re rifle and handgun for hunting and other recreational activities?

Hi wondered what your opinion on hunting is are you mad when you come back from iraq and other places how you feel about hunting when you come back and see open season signs. I like all opinions from brave veterens and military people.
I do not think guns are evil
how are they unrealated though?

He needs it for Hunting and Self Defense. It has to be "Open Carry" approved or something like that. He allready has a permit.

I’ve become very interested in firearms lately and I find it difficult to find a website with interesting articles on guns. I’ve always been into guns and military stuff, not really into hunting but I would like to try it someday. I would like to buy a rifle in a few months when I’m old enough and I would like to get something other than an AR-15 but I really don’t know what else is out there. Any websites that offer reviews and interesting articles on the subject would be very much appreciated.

I live in WV and own a AR-15 Bushmaster, Tactical .12 ga Mossburg & other weapons. How do I sell them legally? I have a military spinal cord injury and can no longer enjoy shooting sports and hunting. Most are long guns, but I also have a Colt 1991-A1 .45 semi. and a Rossi S & W J frame Stainless Steel .38. All are like new condition and well cared for. Do I need to have a dealer sell them and give up a commission?

I am an Air Force ROTC cadet/ college student and I am interested in learning how to shoot… the right way. I’m very familiar with firearms as I have grown up doing lots of hunting but I have never received any formal instruction or lessons.
I have an old Colt AR-15 at my disposal I want to know the best ways to learn about it, train with it, and learn the proper range procedures in hopes I can use it to practice qualifying with it as if it were an M-4. As I am in the Air Force, people know tons about air power but not really anything about marksmanship.
Would it be best if I purchased Marine Corps and Army marksmanship manuals and a Colt factory manual and just try to figure it our on my own or would it be better or even ethical to hire one of the NCOs from the local Marine garrison to tutor me at the local rifle range in his free time? I know the AR-15 is the civilian precursor to the modern M-4, but how similar are they mechanically and performance-wise?
I have never received any formal marksmanship or firearms training EXCEPT for a Hunter Education course.

Today at work I over heard 3 guys talk about guns in reference to hunting and recreation shooting. We are in the military too. Well a civilian who had her young children present asked the 3 guys to talk about something else because her children were present. They all looked at her like she was crazy but they said sorry and moved their conversation further away. Why would this lady find their conversation so offensive?

By this I mean stats and information on the operation of Handguns, Rifles, and Shotguns: Military, Hunting and Citizen Owned. I already know the basics of firearms but would like to learn more about specific guns themselves. And any other books on Firearms would be greatly appreciated if listed! Thank you!

Muzzle loaders, Self reloading, Military rifles, Shotguns don’t count. I’m talking about legal hunting/shooting rifles for civilian use with store bought cartridges.
I just want your opinion not the exact 100% hands down correct answer. Keep your thumbs down to yourself its an open forum.

Hey, i was just wondering if one would need a permit for a semi automatic "assault" rifle for hunting, or if only a clean criminal record is needed (18 years old too, of course). If you do need a permit, how much do they cost? I live in Wisconsin, and i’ve looked, but i can’t find the laws for here on the ‘net anywhere. Any help will be appreciated. Thanks in advance!
