The military has needed a new rifle for a while now. The soldiers have been saying it. Many of the top brass have been saying it. There have been better alternatives to the M16/M4 for many years now, even simple upper receiver swaps that would improve the current system dramatically. So why is this test even necessary?

Haven’t the last four decades been test enough?
If it was up to me, I would go for the Magpul Masada.

I’ve learned from multiple military sources that the M16 and M4 are the current infantry rifles issued to soldiers in the American Military. I assume this applies to both the Marines and Army. However, I’m curious as to why these two weapons are both circulated through the military, and in what quantity they’re present in, respectively. Of the two, which is more common for a soldier to be issued?

i saw a video of a marine on the news
he had an M249 with an ACOG 4x scope
my question is, how do you get optics in the marines/military?
do you have to qualify for the optic? or can you just take it from an armory(or wherever u get the optic from)
also leading to another question
when a soldier is deployed..how does he get optics for his rifle?(red dot, laser sights all that good stuff, etc)
can he just take it?
btw guys, i really mean he had an M249..not an M16, i made no mistake..he had an M249 SAW with an ACOG sight and a vertical grip

Something like the L85 or AUG. Maybe one with a heavier round like the 6.8 mm Remington.
Also, I don’t play video games so don’t call this a CoD question.
I am talking about the next 10 or so years.
I don’t think money should be considered much of a concern as we do account for about half of the worlds total military spending at 700 billion US dollars
Xeno, I believe you mean XM-8 as I can find no references to MX-8 anywhere, and that is neither bullpup nor .308 caliber, this may not be a CoD question but that was a CoD answer.
What?, Thats not what I meant, we have the best funded military the world over, if we want to switch to a bullpup rifle we can even if it does cost a bit more than an M16. China, the UK, Australia, and France have all switched and all have much less funding than we do.
Also, sarcasm sure as hell isn’t going to help illustrate your point, its just so f*cking annoying.

I realize that many soldiers use the m4 or m16 but do they have any red dots or scopes? Or is the specializations only for certain situations or certain military groups.
P.S i dont play video games i want to know certain information to enlist.
i need to know this for safety reasons. i believe todays technology, equipment and specializations could save anybodys life
A red dot will increase your accuracy by a whole lot making the enemy being killed before you. I consider that as being a safe item.

i mean i know you can’t choose a gc36 over a m4 carbine but i mean, your gun "position" Like say you don’t want to be the heavy gunner, you want the m16, or vice versa?
so if i don’t want to carry a heavy and unsexy m60(heavy gunner), i want the cool and slick M4 (rifle men) i dont have a choice?

To start off I love this rifle. It is an M16 with an upper receiver made by Barrett and we already know them to be reliable. It shoots 6.8 which is very good and provides the stopping power worthy of an Assault rifle with the accuracy and precision of an M16. It would be a great counter to the Ak-47 which makes the M16 look like a BB Gun. I hear many stories of insurgents still coming at you after being hit with an M16.
When I enlist in the Marines soon i hope to have a reliable gun.
do you think the US Military will replace the M16 with this.
Just some extra information: In addition, the REC7 uses the new 6.8 mm Remington SPC (6.8 x 43) cartridge, a round that is of roughly equivalent length to 5.56 mm ammunition, making it compatible with the M16 and M4 rifle magazines currently in use by the United States Military. According to Barrett, the new 6.8 mm round boasts 50% more stopping power than the 5.56 mm round and a longer effective range. The round has a slightly lower velocity than the 5.56 mm round, however Barrett claims it has 1.5 times the kinetic energy of the 5.56 mm round. The company claims that it is effective at six hundred meters and has a muzzle velocity of 2650 feet per second when fired from a 16 inch barrel. Like many AR-15 type rifles, such as the M16/M4, the barrel is threaded to allow muzzle attachments such as a suppressor, it can also use the M16/M4s bayonet on its muzzle like the M9 Bayonet or OKC-3S Bayonet. The REC7 employs the S.I.R. handguard (Selective Integration Rail) manufactured by ARMS Inc
which allows many military accessories such as a bipod, night vision devices, and combat optics to be placed on the rifle. In addition the SIR system has flip-up iron sights already built in to the system for when the weapon is used as a stand alone rifle.
M4 Carbine or the M16 aren’t good enough for the grunts on the field. This isn’t really a new revelation either. Let’s face it, since day 1 of the adoption of the M16 during Vietnam, the M16 hasn’t exactly been everyone’s favorite assualt rifle. In fact, it has been regarded by some as a killer of US troops, leaving them stuck in firefights without effective stopping power and jammed rounds.

If a person is ranked higher in the military would they have a choice of what kind of weapon(of the available ones) or do they have to use a standard one? Also, can they personalize their weapon to their liking with certain scopes and what not?
I mean general soldiers and much so if you’re a captain or such would you be able to choose between an m16 or m4, maybe possibly choose a different weapon class like an smg

I am joining the National Guard, and I am wondering if I can own an m4 or m16?
Are they more likely to approve my license request because I would be military? Also, would there be any kind of discount to the license fee bacause of this?
For anybody in the National Guard: If I did own one, along with my pistol… Could I use it during shooting drills?

I know for the most part the law is 18 for a rifle/shot gun and 21 for a hand pistol. Now what I need clarification is how old do you have to be to own an assault rifle such as a M1 or a M16?

Or any other gun of that sort. Like, is it legal to hunt with an m-16 or something? What about a handgun?
Haha, yeah I know it would be unwise. I’m just curious.
Fellers,
I know an M16 isn’t an assault rifle. I was just asking if assault rifles are legal, and if M16s and other fully-automatic weapons would be legal too.

I see that nations like China, Belgium, Israel and others all have adopted new 21st century rifles with the same or better specs as the M16/M4 and that are more adapt for urban warfare, what rifle do you think will replace the outdated ones we have now and when?
A 21st century rifle is like the Tavor Assault Rifle where the magazine and gear box are behind the trigger so the barrell is farther back making the weapon and silloette of the fighter smaller. Also optics such as a red dot or laser scope are built in

I asked this question before and I want to clarify that I want a Colt MILITARY rifle, NOT a Colt civilian rifle.
I know that Bushmaster has the option to buy their military models in semi-auto only configuration, so I want to know if Colt will do the same. I am not impressed with their civilian market products and would really like their military rifle, even in semi-auto only.
http://www.fedspending.org/fpds/fpds.php?reptype=r&detail=-1&sortp=f&datype=T&reptype=r&database=fpds&database=fpds&parent_id=56506&fiscal_year=2008&record_num=f500
To all of you who are saying Bushmaster did not have any government contracts, click on that. Come on people, do a little research before you post something.
Also compare these two:
http://www.coltsmfg.com/products-c6-q9-Colt_Rifles.aspx#
http://www.colt.com/mil/M16.asp
So to those of you who keep saying their military rifles are the same as their civilian rifles, NO THEY ARE NOT THE SAME!!! Seriously, do a little research before you post.

Is the m14 in service as a sniper rifle or did it get replaced by something else. Would an m16 varient be better for sniping these days?

I personally would prefer a 7.62 in an AR frame similar to the sniper rifles used by Delta. I know that is highly improbable because of the reduced amount of rounds per mag, but the extra power would be really nice. What is your opinion, and which round that is being researched for the future do you think will be implimented?
Please answer with calibers that are useable in a light service rifle. Not .50. Something like that is too heavy. This Q is for military personell with experience in shooting.
thanks for your service in nam runnin, in relation to your answer, I had 18 M16 mags, but would have settled for 6 with 7.62 b/c you dont have to shoot 3 times to kill 1 hadgi

if u have a standard m4/m16 that the army gives you, do you have to pay for optics such as acog acopes/ holographic etc. and also would u have to pay or be granted to have a m203 grenade launcher etc?

The XM8 fared far better than the other assault rifles fielded by the US Army as potential M4 replacements, with just 127 stoppages (out of 60,000 rounds fired) as opposed to the HK 416 (the AR currently used by 1st SFOD-D and DEVGRU) with 233 stoppages and the FN SCAR with 226. The current service rifle, the M4 scored a pathetic 882 stoppages. It seems to me like the M4/M16 even with SOPMOD attachments are antiquated weapons and have no business in 21st Century warfare when other weapons are clearly superior and feasible, so it makes no sense to me that with all the money the US government spends on defense, that they could at least ensure our troops have the most advanced weaponry available. Of course this could just be like the US Army’s decision not to adopt the Dragon Skin body armor, even though it was clearly superior to the Army’s Interceptor armor; hell if it’s good enough for Generals on the field and the CIA, it should at least be as good for the Special Forces or 75th Ranger Battalion am I right? As someone who plans to get commissioned into the US Navy after college I would at least like to serve in a military that ensures that it’s infantry forces have the best equipment available regardless of the cost.
