now i know the M4 is a lot more compact than the m16 as well a lot smaller lighter and easier to carry, thus making it ideal for close quarters combat and fighting in urban operations. HOWEVER the M16 (primarily the M16a3 and A4) are number 1. a lot more accurate, number 2 have longer range, as well as they pack much more of a punch with the 5.56 than the m4 does due to its longer barrel and higher muzzle velocity. and the thing with firing a substantially small round for an assault rifle is you need a rifle that is capable of firing it effectively enough so it can drop the enemy with 1 or 2 shots. and thats exactly what the m16 does, the m4 having a shorter barrel fires it with less ferocity thus making the initial wound as deadly as if i were fired from an m16. it also pierces body armor better than the m4 and is more reliable (m4 jams like a ***** from what i hear). so feel free to correct me if im wrong i’m just a die hard m16 fan and i think the US military is making a huge mistake by choosing to replace it with the m4.

Here’s some of what i’ve narrowed it down to.
-HK416/417
-SCAR H/L
-knights armament PDW
Note: I am not a gamer and have never played call of duty in my life.
Note: We shouldn’t use the 5.56(x45) anymore, we need to get into something between the light/weak 5.56 and the heavy/powerful 7.62mm. maybe the 6mm or the 6.8mm.
Good point aden, if we replace the m4, it needs to be something more reliable if we can’t change the caliber.

I have been looking up online on getting a gun or two and get a collection started. I am currently looking at civilian version of the M4, it’s a semi-automatic and as far as I know, a full auto assault rifle is illegal? That’s besides the point. I am wondering the following.
Do you need any type of license in the state of Alaska to Buy a gun, Shoot a gun, or Carry a semi auto assault rifle with you?

So I was reading a military forum about the M4. And it said they had a survey to see how the soldiers like the M4 90% were happy and 80% were happy with the M16A4 in the marines. And the competitors are going up against the NEW M4A1. And with all of the money in the AR15 and it’s rounds. I dont see it being replaced.
Question:Do you think the M4 will be replaced by any of the rifles at the 2011 replacement competion?
Question:How many more years will we use the M4 and M16A4 as our primary rifles

And what do you think should be it’s replacement?
I think the M4 is okay, it’s automatic, it’s accurate, but it’s smaller and just as powerful as the M-16 which isn’t very powerful. I think that a modified M-14 needs to become the standard, that thing is a beast! It’s so accurate and powerful that it’s used as a medium range sniper rifle. If the military can find a way to make the M-14 lighter and automatic, I think the troops would be set.

I think the guns are technologically advanced, and in the case of the F2000, greatly superior to the M4′s currently jamming on our troops in their fight for civility in the middle east. The F2000 is a 5.56 chambered weapon, that has a longer barrel than the M4, but is much shorter. It uses M16 magazines, so it would fit right in with current weapons.
Or, thanks to the way the contracts work, is there no way for troops to recquisition their commanders to let them have better guns, even if they paid out of pocket for them? I’d consider my rifle worth investing in.
I have seen group photos of guys in my recruiter’s office that have weapons that i doubt are commonly issued. And it was the recruiter in the photos, not just a generic promotional photo.
I know SF are well known for giving the military beaurocrats the finger, and using whatever guns they feel best get the job done (H&K’s SCAR-L). Are they the only guys that get a choice in guns?
I’ll be doing 89D EOD in the Army, btw.

I was wondering…
If I had an m14 in my gun safe in my house (I do) and I planned to enlist, would I be allowed to use that gun? Or is there any situation I would be allowed to do so?
Like, can I get a certain gun approved to use that I am comfortable and skilled with? Because I want my M14 instead of having to use an M4 which can only shoot half as far.

I don’t care if you take it from a civilian or military perspective, I’m just curious. There are a million m-4′s, AR-15, now there are SCARs, the US military is looking at XM8′s right now, Bushmaster just came out with the ACR, every gun company under the sun has their version of an m4/ar15. If money is no issue, what are the pros and cons of all these straight out of the box? (feel free to add any other 5.56 nato round shooting assault rifles)
Reading the first answer I got maybe I’m not being clear. Yeah no crap about full auto not being legal, I’m not retarded, I’m not 12, I own several firearms of my own. I’m trying to find out the major pros, cons, and differences of all these new assault rifles that are on the market and that are coming out.
Ahem, once again, reading some of the answers, this is not about ammo, this is about guns, thanks
Reading more answers…..I’m NOT asking "What is an assault rifle?" I’m DO KNOW that I cannot get full auto…thanks

When the barrell gets shot out/worn out on an assault rifle like an M4 or M16, what gets replaced? Just the barrell, the whole upper reciever, other parts? How much of a pain in the ass is it?

Longer barrel with carbine length, ambidextrous, change between regular barrels and the H-BAR with no trouble. Might as well just adopt the Steyr AUG with a 20 inch barrel so you get M16 A1-A4 like performance instead of the problematic 14 inch M4 barrel. The Steyr also has all of it’s problems worked out, so there will be no "gun hell" to go through like there was when the M-16 was first put into service.
Ignore the economic situation at the moment, because we are buying tanks which aren’t being used. Think of how many new rifles could be bought for the price of one tank.

I’m in the Army and my unit is buying them from DPMS. It has the collapseable buttstock of an M4 and comes with 2 of the usual 30 round magazines. Other then that it is completely stock, no attachments yet. I live in OR but am looking at moving back to CA. I just don’t wanna get rid of my rifle to do it lol.
