what rifle should i get?

March 25th, 2011 by eranio

so two weekends from now im going to a gun show. they military surplus rifles and such. last time i went i found someone getting rid of a mint condition Enfield that someone was selling for 100 dollars. im walkin in with 150 bucks and leaving with a rifle. alternately, i found an add for a guy selling a "new" unissued Mosin-nagant (dont know what model yet) with all the goodies like a bayonet, oil, pouches, etc. for 150 bucks. what rifle would be the best to get if i can find it? like, between an Mosin Nagant, Enfield, etc..

note: if i find a nice looking 03′ Springfield im jumping on that. I buy american guns before anything else.
also i don’t know if i should buy it from the one guy for 150 or wait until two weekends from now and go to the gun show. because at the gun show i just have this feeling that i might be able to find the same gun and all that stuff for like 100.
it’s the 91/30 model, so the most accurate and prolific of the different models.

Rich-it’s the standard russian infantry rifle of WW2. they’re a penny a dozen.

Buying used military rifles from your well known sporting goods retailers…?

January 6th, 2011 by eranio

When buying a used military rifle such as a Mosin Nagant from one of your major retailers, could you assume it to be better quality than what you buy at the gun show? Are these rifles inspected to some degree before they are sold at the retailers? I know a bore inspection would be essential, but these ones seem in tip top shape. Or could they possibly sell complete junk and your failure of proper inspection could lead to a bad purchase? No mom and pop shop, Gander Mountain, Cabelas, etc.

Good rifles that arent .22 caliber for under 200$?

December 1st, 2010 by eranio

I want it beacuse I live in a bad neighborhood and I just want it for target shooting too. I was thinking maybe a military surplus gun. Ive heard good things about lee enfield’s. But I just wanted some other options.
Hell even a good boltaction.
Okay man. I shouldnt have the right to defend myself in my own house beacuse im 19 and cant get a pistol till im 21? I just want something that will have man stopping power thats simiautomatic.
Thanks you guys are a great help im leaning towards either a pump that holds quite a few shells or a mosin nagant.

What should my next gun purchase be?

October 17th, 2010 by eranio

More of an opinion question really but I really want some advice on what my next gun should be. I currently have three Remington 870′s (2×12 Gauge Super Magnums, one 20 gauge), a Norinco SKS, and Remington 700 in .270 with an older Leupold Vari-X scope hanging on my bedroom wall. I’m nineteen years old and live in Virginia. The only guns that technically belong to me are the SKS and the 20 gauge 870. The rest all belong to my dad and I hunt occasionly and have all my duck, rabbit, squirrel, and whitetail needs covered.

My question is what type of firearm should I get that is under 0-0 in price. I enjoy all kinds of shooting but am most experienced with shooting milsurp rifles and 100-200 yard hunting and target shooting. I was strongly considering picking up a Mosin Nagant just for the sake of adding to my ComBloc collection of military rifles. Next would be the AK which i could potentially get both for 0, 100 for the Mosin and 500 for the AK. I have also flipped around the idea of a Springfield XD or shelling out the big bucks and building my own AR for 00. I’m open to any suggestions from those of you who have a favorite gun or have faced a similar situation as me.
Also in VA it’s legal for me to posses a handgun just not to purchase one. My dad would be more than willing to buy me any handgun I wanted and I have numerous friends I could have buy me ammo. So handguns are part of the picture as well
I cannot afford to pay 10,000 dollars plus all the title II paper work and the 200 dollar tax stamp for an M16 and as much as I love the SCAR-H i believe they cost about 2,500 to 3000 dollars. Remember 0-0
I have six 22lr’s. A pump action, a semi auto rifle, two bolt actions, and for pistols a revolver and an automatic. Also no more shotguns
Seth just reminded me I’m also very interested in a marlin lever action or any other brand someone can recommend

floating barrel on mosin nagant 91/30?

October 14th, 2010 by eranio

i have a russian 1943 izzy 91/30 with an EXCELLENT bore, and i was thinking of floating the barrel. at 100yds, i can get1/4in groups, but as i keep shooting, accuracy goes downhill because the barrel heats up too much. this is one reason i want to float the barrel, so the heat MAY not build up as quickly. also, i have heard that since there is less stress on the barrel when it is floated, accuracy goes up quite a bit. anyone have any experince with this, and if so any suggestions on the proper way to float the barrel would be great. thanks!!!

also, i know the mosin nagant is a military rifle, thus i do not expect bullseye accuracy at 200+ yds, i am just in love with these rifles and i know that modern rifles are more accurate, but i want to try and make the mosin as accurate as possible.

Poll – Sniper rifles in the urban battle field?

June 28th, 2010 by eranio

Now, as a bit of an experiment, i’d like to hear your opinion

You are in an urban battle field, a downtown of any major city. Let’s say New York. Big city blocks, tall buildings, and the subway system. Total anarchy is rampant, every man for himself. You are given the choice between 4 sniper rifles. They are as follows:

#1: Karabiner 98k with Zeiss 4x ZF42 scope, chambered in 8mm (7.92x57mm Mauser)

#2: Mosin-Nagant 91/30 with 4x PEM scope, chambered in 7.62x54R

#3: Lee-Enfield SMLE No.1 MK III, (HT) with 4x telescope, chambered in .303 British

#4: Gewehr 43 with 4x ZF 4 scope, chambered in 8mm (7.92x57mm Mauser)

The enemy is an organized force, complete with supply lines and the latest in ceramic body armor. You are given the rifle of your choice, ammuniton is plentiful, and a cleaning kit for your gun of choice. In this urban guerrila war, you are to fight for your life. Please state which one you would choose and give a detailed explaination on why.

I’ll start out. I’d choose the Mosin-Nagant. The cartridge is plenty powerful for shots over 300 yards, and with the scope accurate shots have been recorded up to and beyond the 1000 yard mark. I own and use one today and go with the "use what you know" trick, though the farthest shot I ever got was 445 yards. It, to me, seems like the obvious choice for its reliability, ease of use, and accuracy.

Thank you for your input!

Obviously, you people can’t enjoy a thought experiment. Just take it for what it is. And, those say this is a video game, where are you going to be when the riots occur in your neighborhood?

Is there a less crazy alternative to the NRA?

March 14th, 2010 by eranio

I’m looking for a less gung-ho and money-hungry organization that preferably focuses more on C&R weapons, for I focus on older Russian military firearms, such as the Mosin-Nagant 1891/30 and it’s many variants. A group that doesn’t involve it’s self much in politics would be nice as well. Any suggestions?

By the way, I’m stuck in California, so no state-specific ones, please.

Looking for a few good surplus rifles, any ideas?

November 21st, 2009 by eranio

I’m looking to fill my gun cabnit with a few surplus rifles(mostly target shooting and maybe varmint hunting). When I think of surplus rifles I think of the mosin nagant, kar98, springfield, lee enfield, sks, ak47, and other popular military rifles. I want reliabilityy, cheap ammunition, and decent/good accuracy. Whats my best bet? I would like to pay between 0-0 for each rifle.
