Would Israel actually be capable of halting Iran's nuclear program through a conventional military attack?

October 6th, 2010 by eranio

Many analysts have commented on the possibility of a US and/or Israeli led strike against Iran to try to halt Iran’s nuclear program.

They have talked about such an attack requiring as many as 1000 sorties. This would be necessary because the site are so well buried and protected.

Would Israel actually be capable of doing this with conventional military force?

Of course, they’ve always got their own nuclear weapons to fall back on. But could they achieve this goal with conventional means?

Do you believe the US military should be listed as a terror organisation?

September 24th, 2010 by eranio

The US has killed innocents the world over. Nuclear weapons in Japan, terror and torture in Iraq, terror bombings of innocents in Afghanistan, funding dictatorships in Latin AMerica, mass murder in Vietnam. They continue to possess WMD, develop horrifc weapons and tell the worl it can do what it wants. I think the US is a terror state and its military should be listed as a terror group and have all funds cut off. Do you agree?

North Korea vs. Iran. : If these two countries were to engage in a military battle, then who would win?

September 16th, 2010 by eranio

As of 2009.

Explain your reasoning as to why either country would be victorious in this military battle.

No nuclear weapons can be used in this battle.

Let’s say that North Korea and Iran were right next to each other in the same way that Iraq and Iran are right next to each other.

What powers does the POTUS have regarding the use of nuclear weapons?

September 15th, 2010 by eranio

The president can deploy troops and authorize military strikes without approval of congress, can the president use nuclear weapons in this way as well?

If the USA was *believed* to be under nuclear attack (ICBMs inbound), does the POTUS have full authority to launch a nuclear retaliation?

How sure are you that Iran has nuclear weapons?

September 14th, 2010 by eranio

I think Pakistan is more crazier than Iran, far more crazier, but Pakistan has nuclear weapons and nobody seems to care much about that. They don’t have any sanctions against them, and their military is tied up in Islamic terrorist groups etc.

I really don’t think Iran does have nuclear weapons, I just don’t. Theres no proof, and I saw a video of Ahmadinejad addressing a screaming crowd saying if they had nuclear weapons, they would tell the whole world about it. Like they’d be proud of it.

What is the point of the United States having nuclear weapons of mass destruction?

September 11th, 2010 by eranio

I can see the use for smaller, tactical nukes whose purpose is to strike a military target, and does not decimate civilian populations or endanger the planet to any great extent.

I do not see the use for having a very large "total annihilation" nuclear weapons system. What is the point?

Are we trying to frighten everyone in the world? Doesn’t that just make them want to build nukes of their own? This isn’t the cold war, Mutually assured destruction doesn’t work with terrorist states, they want to die.

Meanwhile, we are just scaring people with these things. What were we going to do with them? Nuke enemy cities, where the civilian populace is not a threat to us?

So what about China and the European Union, are we afraid of these people, so much so that we must be prepared to obliterate them?

I say it’s completely nuts. And I am a conservative "hawk" who is pro-strong defense and border security.
I would ask for total worldwide WMD disarmament, starting with nukes and pathogens and chemical agents.

I would encourage beefy border security, offer aid to our allies, support UN troops for peacekeeping, and build strong missile defense systems in our nation and encourage our allies to do the same.

Conventional weapons will do for peacekeeping and thwarting terrorism. And disarming these things which I would hope we have no intention to use should be a priority, and it would encourage other nations to disarm as well.

I’m not a pacifist when it comes to defense. I believe in strong defense, and some offensive capability where needed. But WMD is something we should NEVER use.

What if China were able to nuke the United States, most major cities? Would nuking Chinese cities bring those people back? Or would it create the destruction of all mankind?

Vengence is not worth a billion lives.
I would appreciate your thoughts on my question. (It’s at the top of the page, please don’t give me the "what was the question" lecture)

Whether you agree or disagree, please state your reasons, keep it civil, and dont use personal attacks, thank you.
If it came down to this, and several US cities have been nuked by a foreign government, my first concern is for the surviving American lives. I would do anything to spare their lives. Come on, let’s face it, what is the point of "winning the war" when we’re in danger of losing every American life?

I’d counterstrike, of course, against military targets. But no nukes, certainly not against civilians. The survival of the biosphere and the human race, as well as American lives are hanging in the balance. I would not launch nukes, ever.
Erehwon-

Deterrence doesn’t work. Other nations are arming for nuclear conflict, and placing more American lives in danger in the process.

No, I wouldn’t do it if other nations didn’t do it as well, but the nuclear standoff is pointless. Someone has to make the first move.

Deterrence isn’t a deterrence to terrorist states, either. And I still wouldn’t nuke Iran, those people are not anti-USA their government is.

Point is, civilians don’t need to be in fear of nuclear attacks. That’s idiotic.
Tuugalik- If you seriously believe "nuking our enemies back" will do anything to spare American lives, and will not affect the survival of the human SPECIES, then you my friend are the one that is drunk.

Nuclear retaliation does what? What does it do? If it’s just there as a BLUFF then why have nuclear material inside?

What would nuking the civilian population accomplish?

If you don’t have reasons for disagreeing, don’t bother posting.
Miss Manners-

What is the point?

I didn’t say I would lay down and die. I said counterstrike against military targets.

And by the way, in the unlikely scenario that the entire world would attempt to nuke us at once, what would be the f—ing point in nuking everyone back?

Do you want to see the end of the human race?

IF we were unable to stop those missiles from striking us, nothing we do will protect our civilians anyway. So what is the point of hitting back? To cause more innocent people to die?

I’d aim for every missile, silo, submarine, aircraft, etc. But I would not aim for civilian people who did nothing to harm the United States.

I do thank you for your answer, you did at least state your reasoning. I strongly disagree.
I’m more than willing to debate this in a civil fashion, just message me or send an email.

Civil comments only, please.

Why is it unjust for the U.S. to utilize military intervention to prevent our enemies from amassing nukes?

September 8th, 2010 by eranio

I have a debate coming up in my AP lit class. The prompt is: It is just for the U.S. to use military intervention to prevent our enemies from amassing nuclear weapons. We are the con side, arguing that it is unjust. However, I am having trouble finding concrete examples in history or the present day that would show how it is unjust for us to do so.

Would the liberals be upset if Iran used its nuclear weapons to destroy Israel?

September 7th, 2010 by eranio

The only hope Israel has of stopping Iran from getting nuclear weapons and using them on Israel is military action.

The problem is that the Israeli military is probably not big enough to get the job done.

What are the benefits of nuclear weapons?

September 7th, 2010 by eranio

Why would we ever resort to nuclear weapons when we could just use bombs? Both can and do destroy any military targets we want them to, why is it necessary to kill all of the civilians in the area as well as the entire environment while we’re at it?
Maybe I should have rephrased the question. I know the benefits of having nukes, what I meant to ask was what is the benefit of USING nukes.

Can someone please show me some sources that suggest US military action deters other countries?

September 4th, 2010 by eranio

I don’t want nuclear weapon deterrence, I want evidence to show that say, military action in Iraq would deter other countries from attacking/developing nuclear weapons. The more the merrier!

What is the point of having a MASSIVE Military?

August 26th, 2010 by eranio

You don’t need a huge Military to defeat lesser powerful nations, and should a confrontation happen between the US and China/Russia Nuclear Weapons would be used far far sooner then a huge Military could be effectively used, and those Nuclear Weapons would end things quite quickly anyway, so what the hell is the point?

Is there any military device that can counteract a nuclear weapon?

Not a disarmament treaty like START; an actual device that can defend against and possibly disarm nuclear weapons?

Does President Obama want to eliminate the military and just have Hillary Clinton to speak to our enemies?

August 16th, 2010 by eranio

He wants to get arid of nuclear weapons, why not just eliminate the military once the Iraqi and Afghanistan wars are over? What happens when the USA is the only nation without nuclear weapons?

Wouldn't it be perfect to ban guns sales to law abiding citizens?

August 13th, 2010 by eranio

Then we could also ban nuclear weapons, and get rid of ours. Heck lets ban all wars. Then we don’t even need a military at all.

Does Congress have to approve all military actions taken by a President?

July 31st, 2010 by eranio

What if we are already at war and our military decides the use of nuclear weapons is needed? Does the military need an approval from Congress in which weaponry is used?

Can the President override Congress on military issues?

What's going on with Russia's strengthening it's military and developing new nuclear weapons?

July 20th, 2010 by eranio

"Vladimir Putin boasted of developing new nuclear weapons to strengthen Russia’s military power today and warned the United States not to ignore Moscow’s objections to a planned missile defence shield in Europe.

President Putin pledged to counter the shield unless the US and Europe took account of Russia’s concerns. He also called on the US to set a date for withdrawal of troops from Iraq, adding that the 2003 invasion had been an attempt to secure control of its oil reserves.

In a live televised question-and-answer programme with members of the public, Mr Putin made clear that he was determined to restore Russia’s military prestige by using the vast income from its own oil and gas resources. He said that Russia had a “grandiose” plan to strengthen the armed forces after years of decline following the collapse of the Soviet Union. "
"He urged the US to set a date for ending its occupation of Iraq, saying it was “absolutely pointless to fight with a people”.
