Type of steel used for M16 & other military weapons?

September 10th, 2010 by eranio

I’ve noticed that–with some effort–I can bend rebar. Then, when I was in the Corps, the barrel of my rifle was much, much stronger. Similarly, the barrels of the M2 .50cal machine gun, the M19 40mm grenade launcher, and other weapons were just as strong or stronger.

I read up on types of steel on Wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steel

Still, I can’t figure out what type of steel weapons manufacturers use to make military grade fire arms. I suspect that it may be tool steel, dual-phase steel, or Hadfield steel. Another search turned me on to something called "Type 415 Stainless Steel", which I’d hope has a more common or colloquial name.

Does anybody know for sure?
Huh… whatdaya know… no metallurgy section.

Military Waivers, the Lautenberg Amendment, Recruiting?

September 9th, 2010 by eranio

Here’s the plain facts. Hopefully this will be answered by somebody(s) in the know. Perhaps someone from military recruiting… Or someone with valid experience.

Here’s the facts (devoid of the usual, "it was the cop", "it was someone else’s fault" and bologna to that effect)…

5 years ago I was charged with DV. Was offered a deal I couldn’t refuse, plead guilty to disorderly person, in 5 years (per my lawyer-stay good, as I was prior to-no runs ins with police before or since) there’s a VERY good chance to have it expunged. Seemed much more affordable in the long run than fighting. Especially after being advised by my attorney (in Michigan) that it (DV) WILL be prosecuted, it HAS to be, by state law, to the end. No exceptions… except…The reason for the offer was a shaky prosecutors case. Nonetheless, I took the deal and do not regret it. The reason for the charge was in fact a domestic dispute. No injuries, no weapons, no hitting, kicking, no threats-we were both however wrestling with each other. No debate there. In all reality, people have been nailed to the cross for much less in DV cases, and guys that deserved much more have gotten away with it. (Re: Offer I couldn’t refuse, alternative, I couldn’t afford). It was a bad time and situation, but we have been together ever since (married w/children, NEVER another incident-EVER). Was simply a bad time for both of us, and we’ve moved on and grown together (not that that is pertinent, just wanted to get that out there).

So, I finally made the big decision and went to the recruiting center. During the initial Q&A I disclosed my record for disorderly person. It lead to further conversation, and the original charge was disclosed. (I made no attempt to be deceptive about it, I knew it would likely come up anyhow). The recruiter was a complete professional, and sensitive to the situation and lowered her voice as not to embarrass me by others being able to hear the conversation. Obviously she recognized the stigma attached to this issue. Anyway, I was then told (professionally) that there was nothing she could do. I was, under current standards, disqualified and there was nothing she could do. Due to the Lautenberg Amendment (Act). I was quite stunned, seeing as only a week ago cable news did a profile on all the gang bangers that were granted waivers in years recent past, and how the military is diligently trying to weed them all out-but having little success due to many having a code of silence. Moving on… I thanked the recruiter, and left-pretty dejected. Now I know I am not subject to the fire arms restrictions under the Lautenberg Amendment-I was not convicted of domestic violence, and I have since legally purchased hunting rifles-with all applicable background checks. (Form 4473 etc). "Clean as a whistle", as it were.

Now I also fully recognize that the military is not a revolving door employer, subject the to same rules as other employers, so I hear ya there if that’s what you want to tell me. I know a charge of something big is equal to actually having been convicted. Just to get that out there too…

So, hopefully I’ve given the full picture…

Here’s my issue. I understood what the recruiter said, but just for my own piece of mind (based on something she alluded to, visa-ve, "two years ago I may had been able to get you a waiver. Check back in a year)… I thought that was odd-because I was leaving with the notion that this was a done deal. Fate sealed. So I started calling recruiters in other states and telling them the full story of my specific situation. I called Army, Marines and Navy (no Air Force, nothing personal, just easier to find the others). I would say 60% told me the, to varying degrees, same thing as the one I went to in person. The other 40%…. VERY different story. One Navy recruiter two states over (not throwing anyone under the bus with this post) said quote, "Oh, no. You’ve been misinformed (tld him it was simply a friend that told me I was disqualified) you’ need to request a waver. You weren’t convicted of DV, and you are not disqualified from gun ownership or possession-there is no guarantee, but you are not automatically disqualified. That would be subject to approval from higher up".

I see a lot of posts on here about very specific situations, but like my experience today, none have been able to answer my question. And neither did calling around to different recruiters in different regions. The closest I can assess from memory was 60% said "disqualified automatically", 40% said "not automatically disqualified". Generally, I would say majority rules, but, you’ve got to understand how disappointing this experience of not even getting my foot in the door was, then recieving mixed messages.

Any experienced feedback would be appreciated.

Thanks.
The "conviction" (disorderly person, is approaching 5 years. My attorney was obviously careful to say, "may be able too", As for firearms, I have made three fully legal, from federally licensed dealers in the past 4 years. Most recently, 4 months ago. Mossberg short barrel. No issues whatsoever. So, obviously there even more mystery at the root of this all. Because before today, I’d never heard of this amendment. And I most certainly would have when I purchased a firearm months after my conviction on DP. I had it explained on another forum that even if it was expunged, the charge will still be found by the military-BUT one guy telling me ask for a moral waiver, another saying "you’re done until they get desperate again". And the wheels on the bus…

Thanks for your answers so far guy, sincerely appreciated from a total stranger.

Why do sniper rifles suck so much in Call of Duty Modern Warfare 2?

August 28th, 2010 by eranio

I get robbed constantly on this game and its pretty ridiculous when I hit a guy clear across the board, he DOESN’T die, then he just taps the stupid "auto-aim" button, hits "fire" once, and I somehow manage to get killed from the same distance and behind cover. How is it that a light machine gun is more accurate & damaging from across the same distance? Seriously, WTF?! I’ve even been killed by a pistol, a frikkin PISTOL after giving away my position after I shot someone with my sniper rifle from the same distance.

I refuse to play this game like the rest of the idiots who run around with grenade launchers because they can’t hit something smaller than a building. Its just no fun.

Alabama Long Gun Age Requirements?

August 18th, 2010 by eranio

Ok, so I am stumped!

I have been a firearm/military fan since a very young age. And I was wondering…

I’ve been wanting an SVD Dragunov, as well as a Mosin-Nagant M91/30 for quite some time. I live in Alabama, and I read somewhere that in Alabama you only have to be 16 to purchase a long gun. (rifle over 16" in length) I know for sure Georgia Firearms Law states that any persons under the age of 18 cannot purchase a firearm, and any persons under the age of 21 cannot purchase a handgun. I also know for sure that Alabama’s handgun law is the same as Georgia’s…

Anyways, I just would like to know if it is true that you only have to be 16 to own a long gun. In Alabama you don’t have to have any permits, or register your firearms, so no paperwork ;) Thought it would be a great early 17th birthday gift to myself in Feb. (If it’s true >.>)

Also, I’m not sure if this is true either, but it would help…If I live in Alabama, but the only gun shop within under an hours drive is in Georgia, and given that my above question turns out I was correct, will I be able to purchase the Dragunov from the shop in Georgia?

Thanks.

Is it me or does it seem the U.S military rather save money then lives?

August 10th, 2010 by eranio

Alot of technology has been out to make soldiers job’s easier and safer. You see it alot on future weapons but also on other news channels. New shorter, lighter, deadlier rifles, new backpack plastic frames that way half the weight of our current ruck sack. And can carry 3 times as much. Tires for strykers that cannot be destroyed, ruined, etc. Jets that are completly invisible to our enemies latest techonlogy. Boots that make you feel like your walking, running on nothing. Yet stronger then our current combat boots. Bullet proof vest that weigh no where near the weight of our current vest. And also cover all the vitals from any type of enemy round. The current vest weighs 60 pounds WITHOUT the metal plates. Figure in the plates it weighs well over 100 pounds. And it just covers the chest. Your sides are comepletly open (your lungs, kidneys can easily be hit). Everything I have been mentioning has been tested, tested, and tested, for years now. We have some brilliant scientist and engineers and yet our military keep denying them. WHY? Yes I am in the army. The weight for an infantry soldier is out ragous. No wonder we end up with sever back problems. Imagine all the lives we could be saving if the DOD started buying all these new safer more lethal gear. Even the f-22 raptor is being phased out cause its "too expensive". It really seems like the military and politicans care more about saving money then saving lives. Am I right or wrong? Please someone explain to me why? My re-enlistment is coming up and I’m really serious about not re-enlisting becasue it just seems like the government really does not give a damn about us soldiers, marines, sailors, airmen anymore.

Why is the US military so advanced in some areas of technology, but so behind in other areas?

July 29th, 2010 by eranio

I have a little experience with this trend, since I did some technology development for the military of India before coming to the US. People ask me what the Indian military is like. What can I say? In some ways, it’s "f’d up like a soup sandwich!" In others, it is much better than you’d expect a third-world military to be. The main problem is lack of money. So, there are still guys running around the jungle with WWII rifles and vintage Brownings while our nuclear arsenal is being miniaturized.

For example, we developed millimetre-band radar technology for the Indian military. Not just active denial systems and scanners, but also air defence systems, new classes of AESA scanners, miniature AESA devices, counter-SEAD protocols and systems, and even antisatellite and missile knockdown systems. All right there in India. This is public info; I’m not giving anything away by noting this.

The US military has much more money, and better technology in many areas, but it still seems that technology is not being used to its full power. For instance, one of our projects – in India – was to develop a remote-scanning heuristics system for road side bombs. Basically, all explosive devices have certain "unnatural" characteristics which distinguish them from bomb-free landscapes, and the task is to build a computer system which can identify most such devices in a variety of terrains, using a number of scanning and comparative technologies. Good progress was underway by the time I left.

So if we were developing such systems in India, the US must already have such systems, and they must already be deployed. So it makes me frustrated whenever I read news about soldiers killed by a roadside explosive device. To some extent, that MUST be a failure of the military to apply available technology.

You see, Afghanistan is a huge problem for India, because we need those "militants" dead. Those maniacs keep setting off bombs and attacks within India. So I just wonder why the US military does not use its technology to the full extent possible, even if the tech is experimental. Soldiers should not be killed by IED or road side bomb in this age.
"You could have perfect detection of differences in terrain, but you would never detect the IED buried in a culvert under the road"

Sure you can. In fact, that’s fairly simple; even a hobbyist can purchase an off-the-shelf groundscan system.

Why Are Gay Acts Illegal in the US Military? And Why Can't Gays Be in the Military?

July 24th, 2010 by eranio

This is NOT an argument for or against gay rights. I want to know why gays can’t be in the military (I understand the "don’t ask, don’t tell" policy). A body is a body and can train and hold a gun – so why aren’t the head hanchos okay with training gays and sending them off to war? Is it because they’re afraid that gays will then argue that they’re dying for a country that doesn’t support them?

15 year old intrested in learning about long distance firearms training.?

July 22nd, 2010 by eranio

I’m 15 and have never shot a gun before and have been considering the possibility of joining the military in order to pay for college. One military job that would suit me could be a sniper, as I have patiences, coll wits, and think quickly, and have good intuition. I was wondering how I could go about doing some recreational shooting at long distances and, if I show aptitude at it, how I can get some sort of recognition to help a future military career?
Also, please keep any political opinions on the war in Iraq to yourself, I’m not asking weather joining the military is a good idea or not.
Thanks for all the answers, I didn’t want to seem like college tuition was my only motivation, and I’m well aware that a "sniper" is not as what it is portrayed as in pop culture, but from my understanding I thought my attributes would make me an eligible candidate, and If I joined the military it would be beneficial to have at least fired a gun before, and better yet have a basic understanding of marksmanship. Thanks for your answers and sorry for being so unclear!

What's going on with Russia's strengthening it's military and developing new nuclear weapons?

July 20th, 2010 by eranio

"Vladimir Putin boasted of developing new nuclear weapons to strengthen Russia’s military power today and warned the United States not to ignore Moscow’s objections to a planned missile defence shield in Europe.

President Putin pledged to counter the shield unless the US and Europe took account of Russia’s concerns. He also called on the US to set a date for withdrawal of troops from Iraq, adding that the 2003 invasion had been an attempt to secure control of its oil reserves.

In a live televised question-and-answer programme with members of the public, Mr Putin made clear that he was determined to restore Russia’s military prestige by using the vast income from its own oil and gas resources. He said that Russia had a “grandiose” plan to strengthen the armed forces after years of decline following the collapse of the Soviet Union. "
"He urged the US to set a date for ending its occupation of Iraq, saying it was “absolutely pointless to fight with a people”.

Why does the right have its panties in a twist because Elena Kagan banned military recruiters from Harvard?

July 6th, 2010 by eranio

Isn’t Harvard a private institution? I thought private property was God for the conservatards, just after guns. So why doesn’t Harvard, as a private instituition, have the right to tell military recruiters to go elsewhere?
Mark S: I didn’t say anything about cons being stupid. *You* brought that up. I wonder why?
Thanks to all who clarified the real story. But my point is this: What if she did? I’m sure the conservatards would canonize someone who didn’t allow any other government agency on their premises. Why is the military exempt from this super libertarian, "Me and My Shotgun Against the World" ideology?

tough question about enlisment and morals?

June 23rd, 2010 by eranio

I have been conflicted over enlistment, not about the war for personal reasons. religon, friends, my normal life. I look forward to being a soldier. the career i want is in the service, I want to be a weapons seargeant "18 bravo, weapons" whatever u want to call it that is my dream job. I have always had a fascination with the military, firearms, patitisom. these things are everday for me but just cant seem to make up my mind about one thing….is killing for any purpose okay? as a human Iam not always going to agree with everything I do but as a soldier I will do my assigned duty. every since I was young I wanted to be a weapons specialist and infantry soldier but also wanted to be trained in demolitions and inteligence gathering. as well as trained in gureilla warfare. My demon is everything I want in a career has to do with killing people, bad people but people none the less. "is it right to kill another person, can killing one to save a thousand exempt ur soul from the pain
Iam nineteen and have 42 college credits in the major of aviation professional pilot (they do not give out degrees in weapon specialist or warfare in the civialian world). no academys already applied.

Are there different classes you can take that allow a civilian to own and/or carry certain firearms?

June 3rd, 2010 by eranio

I have heard various answers from people in law enforcement but are there certification courses that a civilian can take that will allow them to legally own, operate, and/or carry firearms that fall under FFL levels 2&3 or is just having the tax stamp enough? For instance, I have a very small apartment and I would like to buy a short shotgun so that I can move freely around my home and be able to quickly present the shotgun if there is an intruder, however there are laws prohibiting me, as a civilian from owning a shotgun with a barrel that is less than 18" or one that is under a certain over-all length. Is there a class I could take that would allow me to own and use a firearm like this legally? I would also like to purchase a suppressor for my .45 because I am concerned that if I had to discharge my firearm in an emergency, self defense situation, in my home, that I could damage my hearing.

I have talked with retired police officers, military personnel, and gun store employees and received very mixed answers on this subject. I realize it probably depends a lot on where I live. I live in Virginia, a shall issue state so I would think, with the exception of maybe Florida or some Western states that are even more relaxed on gun control, if it is possible to obtain a license or certification to own something like this I would be able to here. I have, as I stated before, also heard that simply paying the tax stamp and going through a 2 or 3FFL dealer would be enough but I would like to make sure so I don’t create any trouble for myself. Thanks for any help.
I was asking more in generality tho. Most of the FFL 2&3 firearms I am interested in I wold like to have simply to take out to the range and have a good time with. The short shotgun and suppressor are two of the few I would pick as ideal self defense.

Unknown, I own both a .45 1911 and a 9mm Baby Desert Eagle, I practice often at the range but I have been present for an accidental discharge in tight quarters and it is very loud. Also, I live in a rough area and have had armed men at my doorstep on more than one occasion, fortunately the sound of racking the slide on my .45 has been enough of a deterrent to avoid an incident. I have confidence in my shot placement when I am awake but the shotgun takes less thinking if I were to wake up out of a dead sleep and need to defend myself, my loved ones and/or my home.

Eddie, I realize the laws about the length, but as I said I am in extremely cramped quarters so it would be advantageous for me to have a smaller framed firearm.
Also Unknown you said "not in Virginia". Did you mean that there are states that Do issue a permit or license for these kind of firearms? I was watching some behind the scenes features on a DVD and they said that the weapons master on the set is one of the only civilians in the country licensed to own, operate, and supervise the use of a Glock 18c, which is a fully automatic handgun. That statement is actually one of the major things that sparked my interest and led me to ask this question.

Ever notice that gun control advocates are usually ignorant about firearms?

June 2nd, 2010 by eranio

I’ve never, ever met anyone who was both knowledgeable about firearms and not in favor of the second amendment. Knowledgeable in this case means knowledge beyond the fact that guns propel projectiles called bullets which are potentially lethal. Perhaps this goes to show that fear and ignorance go hand in hand. Ted Kennedy’s car has STILL killed more people than any of my guns. BTW I’m a veteran, so don’t even mention the military please.
True, I don’t "use uzi’s for self defense." The 9mm provides inferior stopping power in combat situations. If you doubt this look up the 1986 FBI Florida shootout; One bank robber was shot 6 times without falling and he was free of any drugs or alcohol. Additionally I don’t need to spray and pray–One shot, one kill.
Um, the constitution doesn’t guarantee one’s right to drive drunk or have an abortion. Could this contributor name the intentions of the 8th or 10th amendment off-hand (without a visit to Wiki)? Have they demonstrated they are competent with a firearm?

Ronald Reagan withdrew from a pointless and hopeless military conflict to protect America. So why can't Bush

May 15th, 2010 by eranio

During his presidency, Ronald Reagan brought an old battleship out of mothballs to practice gunboat diplomacy in Lebanon. Using its 18 inch guns and 1800 Marines he attempted to intimidate insurgents. Soon, the results of his policy became clear: over 200 Marines were dead from truck bombs.

Reagan "turned tail" (to use YA! terminology) and he "ran." He realized we should not be there, and the costs of a continued presence were too great.

Conservatives didn’t criticize him then for this prudent, humble action.

Why don’t today’s Conservatives realize a hopeless military situation when they see one, and take the prudent, humble course of action that will protect America from losing its treasure, its unity and the lives of its soldiers?

Why does the American military believe that they are protecting my rights?

May 1st, 2010 by eranio

You are protecting my freedom of speech? My freedom of religion? How? That would be true if you were defending our coastlines from an advancing enemy, but you are not. You are going over to other countries who have no intention of taking over America. Do you honestly believe that if we did not go to Vietnam or the Middle East that we would now be ruled under their tyranny?

Real answers please. I am already anticipating a barrage of "if you don’t like America than get out" responses. Grown ups are talking, go play with your guns.

Fallout 3: Where do you find the “Wanda” assault rifle?

April 12th, 2010 by eranio

In several guides for Fallout 3, including the Fallout 3 Wiki, it is mentioned that there is an upgraded version of the normal assault rifle (not the Chinese assault rifle) called "Wanda", but none of them give a location for this weapon. Is this a console-only weapon that you have to cheat in, or is there somewhere you can actually find it?

What is the best grouping you can get on a target when fiting an assault rifle?

March 29th, 2010 by eranio

Hi

I’m sure most of us have seen the picture of, I think it was a british soldier, whose Kevlar helmet stopped 3 AK 47 rounds in Iraq. I tried telling this to a guy a work but he wouldn’t believe me…even thought there is a picture on the internet to prove it. In his own words he says that"it violates the laws of physics" to get a grouping of about 3 bullets in about a 10 inch square area or so..maybe a bit more. To me it doesn’t seem so far fetcher..but i have never been in the military. It was an AK that fired the rounds, but he’s is trying to tell me that NO machine gun of any type can get such a close grounping..even on 3 round burst. So..I want some solid facts to take back to work and prove him wrong. Some links or real data would be great. Thanks.
