AR-15 is the civilian version of the U.S. Military primary rifle, the M-16. Of course the AR-15 is not a machine gun like the 16, it only fires semi auto. Anyway I have been looking at them for a while and have decided to purchase one of the higher (maybe the highest? Knight’s Armament) end versions. From checking with all the high end (tier 3) manufacturers and many of the lower tier too, everyone is way back ordered. That really surprised me….American citizens seem to be arming themselves to the teeth…it kind of made me wonder why?

I’m watching Ultimate Weapons on the military channel. They were doing the top 10 sniper rifles. I few down the list they were talking about one and the experts stated that this semi auto sniper rifle was so good that it was as accurate or more then a bolt action sniper rifle. Meaning on average bolt actions are more accurate. Why is this?

aahhh the messiah…i guess I knew that…is this guy horrible or what? Is he even a real American?
loving, according to the feds, any gun that when the trigger is pulled is capable of firing more that one bullet, is a machine gun….btw I’m a former U.S. Marine and as such am very familar with full auto weapons

I have put one of these rifles on layaway and I am wondering what is your opinion about the Century Arms Galil rifle, a semi-auto clone of the IMI (Israel Military Industries) Galil rifle used in Israel. I have checked a lot of online forums, gun enthusiast chat rooms, and all I have heard is good things about it. What is your opinion about it and have your fired one, and is it really accurate? Thanks for sharing your answers.

OK, I really want a cool military surplus rifle. I originally wanted an m1 carbine, but the ammo is way to expensive. I want a good rifle for under 350$ and it should have relatively cheap ammo. it can be bolt action or semi-auto.

I am almost 5’7, medium/slim build and do have some experience shooting rifles…I am not to bad a shot!
Here’s some more info-NOT looking to take out any person! I dont know a lot about guns, I have a friend who reloads his 308 cartridges, & said in general 308 ammo is cheaper, he said I could learn to reload my own as well, that is why I thought of going with a 308. I LOVE to target shoot, and am thinking about trying hunting deer this fall. I grew up shooting 22′s and recently shot some semi auto assult riffles of my Dads and fell in love with the power of them compared to the 22′s. I want to get something I can target shoot from long distances-I enjoy it, especially with my guy friends who like to assume I cant! I do like military guns and that is part of it too….I don’t know much about any of it however. I have been told by my boyfriend that I should stick to a 308, and that he prefers a bull barrel and synthetic stock. I like to figure stuff out on my own so I am checking other peoples opinions. Let me know if you need more info from me! And thanks for all your help!
Oh ya, almost forgot. I dont want to spend much more than 0-0.00 to start with. I know this may not include a scope.
Here is some more…my boyfriends brother just bought a remington 700, 308…I forget the rest, but it is a bull barrel, and he bought a scope for it, but it is HEAVY! He said it will kick a lot more than any gun I’ve shot yet (I havent shot that many really). Some of your answers have mentioned some different caliber rifles, what is the big deal between them and a 308? And no matter what gun I went with, would I have to take it to a gunsmith and have it adjusted correctly? It sounds like if I went with a remington I would not have to maybe, but if I went with a Salvage or another kind, I would be better off to do that. what do you all say?

I know the laws there are retarded. I am moving there soon and I was wondering what would make a semi auto rifle called an "assault rifle"

I have seen many definitions.
One is that it is a weapon that can switch between semi-automatic and fully automatic fire. But, a Thompson sub-machine gun can also do this and it is not an assault rifle it is a submachinegun. Another definition is that it fires an intermediate round, something between a rifle round and a pistol round. An AR-15 fires an intermediate round and it is just a semiautomatic rifle that looks "mean"….I don’t consider it an assault rifle, it is just a semi-automatic rifle to me.
The phrase seems bogus to me. It seems that whenever someone wants to make a gun look "bad" they call it "assault rifle". "Assault" also means "attack" so it also seems like the definition depends on what you are using it for. You could assault someone with any rifle…does that mean a bolt action .22 cricket is an assault rifle too?
I feel that if there is no definite defintion that everyone honors and that we should just make up a new term and scrap "assault rifle".
I pretty much have a good idea of what they are, the definition dosn’t seem to be rock hard to me though. A lot of people seem to like to distort it into being something it isn’t. I tihnk we should make a new term and first thing make an accurate definition. Assault Rifle was supposedly coined by Hitler and was not really defined at the time of it’s making thus allowing for all manner of interpretations. I know several people who thing my SKS is an assult rifle just because because it has a bayonet, a grenade launcher and looks kind-of-ish-like an AK-47.
I just think Assault Rifle has been too over used, over defined and has just become a bad phrase.
Now select fire can’t be right because the MP43/44 is only semi-auto and full-auto. There is no burst fire mode. If we make it have 3 fire modes the original assault rifle will no longer be an assault rifle. If we count 2 fire modes things like Thompson’s will be assault rifles and they are not rifles. I find that every option contradicts itself in some way….this is a very complex problem, we are trying to undo 60 years of error.
