If you could invent a military weapon and vehicle, what would it be, and what would it do?

March 30th, 2011 by eranio

For me:
Weapon- a rifle with a long, sniper barrel and a scope that shoots electricity and water-filled glass orbs. When the projectile breaks, the target is shocked by electricity, which is conducted by the water.
Vehicle- a hovering aircraft with 3 front turrets, 2 10 soldier capacity passenger chambers, a cockpit, and a thick, glass bottom for viewing the battlefield. It would be used to transport troops, and launch assaults.
Oh and E. Bunny, your wierd.
Ok people, it’s not that I like war, cause I don’t, but right now! You just wanna be creative! Please, don’t say a gun that has projectiles of world peace! Be creative!

I am looking for a book about a tracker who is called on by the military to find a creature.?

March 29th, 2011 by eranio

Fictional book written between 1998-2005. The CIA/Militrary has a lab. They inject a soldier with something and it transforms him into a superhuman creature who kills everyone. This"tracker" (who just located a lost child in either the mountains or the dessert) is called in to help a Special Forces team track and kill this creature. This creature is hard to kill because the more he eats, the faster he regenerates. At one point in the story the SF team shoot this creature with 50 cal rifles and it seems to slow the creature down. There is also a women in the story (I think she is part of the SF team). I am not sure of her name. The story moves to a few locations, but the monster is hunted in possibly the South Pole, the jungle, or a dessert.

Questions about weapons issued in the Army?

March 21st, 2011 by eranio

When you are issued a weapon, does that weapon follow you around during your entire military career? Or do you have to return it to the armory every day after use and then will probably be given a different weapon the next day? If you switch units do you get issued a different one? And will you have to take off all your personal accessories when you turn in the weapon?

I ask because if you have to return your weapon and get a different one, what happens if the soldier before you used it and didn’t clean it or repair it?

Im looking into a 11b infantry position, my goal is to be in the 82nd airborne. im told its up to the army as to where i end up of course, but on top of my other question. is there anyway to improve my chances of getting into the 82nd airborne? im 19, and im incredibly healthy and athletic, (not trying to brag, just giving the info needed) im trying to be the best soldier i possibly can be.

Are we using any of these future weapons in Iraq or Afghanistan?

December 27th, 2010 by eranio

I have seen all of these shows that show the futuristic weapons that have been developed, but are we actually using them? I am talking about the things that you see on "Future Weapons" like the soldier carried UAV, metal storm, remote controlled robots with mounted guns, etc. Has anyone here that has been in Iraq or Afganistan actually used any of these future weapons? Are any of these things actually being used by the military today, and which ones?
Also, if these things are being used are the basic ground soldiers using them or are they just being used for special operations.

A Question About Military Photographers?

November 19th, 2010 by eranio

I’m hoping to write a fictional story about a war in the near future. I wanted my main character to carry with him some photography equipment, possibly like a combat photographer. However, all the information I could find (through both Wikipedia and google) about military photographers and combat photographers was very limited. From what I do understand, they do not participate in the battles. They are just kind of public relations like, just to get more information out about the war.

I didn’t like the idea of that, as I wanted my character to be a part of the fighting. Does the military train photographers just as they would a regular infantry man, equip him with a standard issue rifle and use him just as a soldier, but with the expectation of him taking photos of action on the side?

If not, can a regular soldier carry a camera of his own with him on missions, or is this prevented by officers, or even considered a security risk?

I couldn’t find much about any of the above mentioned, so I appreciate anyone’s help. Thanks!
Thanks Dan-O for your help, and you too Marco L. While it is fictional and I could change everything around as much as I needed, I did want to stick to a tradtional point of view, to keep with normal military standards, to make it believable that it’s only a few years ahead. Thanks very much for the help!

How do you make a semi-automatic rifle like a civilian AR-15 into a fully automatic rifle?

November 13th, 2010 by eranio

I was wondering what specific mechanism makes the difference between a fully automatic M16a1 and an civilian AR-15? I know this it is now illegal for civilians to own fully auto weapons, but its curious how the military opted for semi or 3-round burst weapons instead of fully auto weapons like the M16a1 which is very useful when a soldier is outnumbered by the enemy.

carrying fake guns in public (presumably bb or paint)?

October 16th, 2010 by eranio

I have a neighbour who lives alone and drives trucks. He also like to dress up like a soldier and carry riffles and hand guns around our estate though he is not in the TA or the military, just a local fake gun club like paintball. It is a little scary as we live next to Hungerford (hungerford massacre) to see this slightly odd chap dressed up with fake guns (though they shoot ballbearings). Should I call the Police? Or is it perfectly legal to carry fake guns in military like clothing outside of a club…please advise

Why do soldiers bang magazines on their helmets?

October 15th, 2010 by eranio

In Saving Private Ryan, during the D-day scene a soldier banged a magazine on his helmet before putting it in his rifle.

I have seen this in several movies and I wondered if it is common place in the real military and if it is just a ritual/superstition or does it actually serves a purpose.

Also in Letters from Iwo Jima, the japanese soldiers banged the grenades on their helmet before using them.

What weapons and equipment are used by a Private in the US Army?

September 21st, 2010 by eranio

I know the ranks and everything, but I’m wondering how a soldier in the Army division of the US Military is assigned a class, such as Snipers or Shotgunners. Is it based on what you perform best with in Basic? Also, what equipment and weapons does one average soldier in the army go into battle with when at the Pvt. level?

Military weapon distribution question?

September 21st, 2010 by eranio

when a rifle is sent to the armorer for any required maintenence/replacement of parts, does that weapon get sent back to the soldier it came from, or is it put into a ‘pool’ of weapons and they are issued out as the need arises?

Why doesn't President Obama just phase out the military?

September 12th, 2010 by eranio

Our nation is having financial difficulties and we need to eliminate all but the most essential programs.

The United States doesn’t need an army, navy, marines, coast guard, etc, etc. It’s just like the 2nd Amendment — these things were implemented by the Founding Fathers over 2 centuries ago! Back then a military and guns were needed, but today we have no need for either.

We don’t need a nasa either. We were already first to go to the moon. Lets let some other countries be the first at something, okay? There is no reason Americans should always be first.

Think of the money that could be saved — bring home every soldier worldwide! No more Bush wars, Afghanistan wars, etc. The money saved could be used to provide free health care and help us fight global warming.

President Obama is bringing the change that WE THE PEOPLE elected!

Is it reasonable to hold the citizens of the U.S. liable for the actions of it's government and military?

September 8th, 2010 by eranio

Considering that citizens vote to elect the officials that represent them, and fund the decisions and actions of their representatives and their military by paying taxes, are they just as responsible as, say, the senator or congressman that votes to go to war with another country and the soldier who aims his gun at an adversary and pulls the trigger?

That is, is there any real distinction among the government officials who decide to wage war, the taxpayers that fund it, the soldiers that participate in it, and the citizens that support and oppose it, or are they all just as complicit?

Do you think JROTC is a waste of time or can it really help for a future in the military?

September 6th, 2010 by eranio

Last year one of my teachers (used to be in the military) knew I was going to join JROTC in high school and said it was a bunch of teenagers playing soldier, and that they should learn to shoot a rifle instead of spinning it. I don’t have any plans to join the military but do you think JROTC can help for a future in the military?

American Military Issued Weapons [M16 vs. M4]?

August 27th, 2010 by eranio

I’ve learned from multiple military sources that the M16 and M4 are the current infantry rifles issued to soldiers in the American Military. I assume this applies to both the Marines and Army. However, I’m curious as to why these two weapons are both circulated through the military, and in what quantity they’re present in, respectively. Of the two, which is more common for a soldier to be issued?

marine question-anyone who had experience with optics on their weapons in the military/question please answer!

August 24th, 2010 by eranio

i saw a video of a marine on the news

he had an M249 with an ACOG 4x scope

my question is, how do you get optics in the marines/military?

do you have to qualify for the optic? or can you just take it from an armory(or wherever u get the optic from)

also leading to another question

when a soldier is deployed..how does he get optics for his rifle?(red dot, laser sights all that good stuff, etc)

can he just take it?
btw guys, i really mean he had an M249..not an M16, i made no mistake..he had an M249 SAW with an ACOG sight and a vertical grip

What is this military weapon called?

July 22nd, 2010 by eranio

It looks or is pretty much a long tube which is aimed manually. The soldier grabs a sort of grenade or bomb and insert it in the hole and quickly covers his ears. He hardly has time to do so since the bomb goes off almost immediately it becomes airborne and fall into the enemy field. Is some sort of cannon. Thanks, Im writing a Fan Fic and need the name, thank you :)
Is quite small and can be carried, is not like those huge cannons, ok guys, just in case xD
YES! THAT’S THE ONE, THANKS :D

Firearms related jobs?

July 21st, 2010 by eranio

I want to be involved and working around firearms, and a little info about me – just graduated high school, and I’m an introvert..but not anti social! I really do well when I work by myself, but if there’s team effort, I’ll step up too. I love shooting ever since I was a kid, and a month after graduating, I decided that I want to work in this area. I’ve thought about other jobs, like computers and technology, and the medical field, but many of my family members work with firearms or related fields, and I guess that I’m in a tradition, and I love it. Many of my uncles and cousins and even one aunt are either veterans or deployed. My aunt was in the Air Force, and 2 Marine uncles and 1 uncle was a soldier, and 4 cousins deployed, one Navy, rest are Marines. The rest of my family are either gunsmiths and ranch "peeps", because we have LOTS of chicken.
I guess I wanted to explain all of that because I have these two paths – the Military or Family business. I know that it’s my choice, and I’ve talked to my family about this, and they help me out as well. But my question is, Is there other areas where I can work with Firearms? I can only think of a few–
Military or the family business. Law Enforcement. Forest/Border worker.
Can anyone please point out other jobs? Thanks in advance
