Way to broad a question to give you meaningful answers. Why don't you look in wikipedia, they have a cross referenced list of weapons by nationality and era that would do you the most good. If you really know that little about weapondry, do a lot of research before writing or your story will lack authenticity.

Vulcan 20mm cannon is a common item.
Sidewinder Missles-heat seaking up to 30mile range
Amram Missles-Long range heat seaking up to 60 mile range
Maverick-Air to ground attack laser guided missle
Harpoon-Anti Ship missle 180mile range
Cluster Bombs-Laser targetted
Bunker Busters-Drills through ground then explodes at designated depth.

A lot of helicopters have "mini-guns" which are a .203 calliber gatling gun type thing. You may remember it from Terminator 2 or the movie Predator.

Check out the history channel website. You should be able to get info there.

Hey,
I was active duty Marines (not in the current war) but here are some nomencaltures (names) for some of the various weapons and weapons systems used by today's military

M4A1 - standard troop rifle
M16A2 - standard troop rifle
M9 - standard issue 9mm handgun
Army Sniper Rifle M24 - 7.62 mm (.308)
USMC Sniper Rifle M40A1 - 7.62 mm (.308)
AT4- rocket launcher
M203- grenade launcher, 40 mm grenade
M249 Machine Gun, Squad Automatic Weapon or SAW
M240G, this machine gun replaced the M60

All branches of the military use the Barrett .50 cal sniper rifle (the big dog) it is capable of hitting a target moving at 1.5 miles away. This riflew is fired from the prone (laying) shooting postion.

USMC Aircraft
==========
CH-46 Sea Knight
CH-53E Super Stallion
AV8 - VERTICLE LIFTOFF FIGHTER (HARRIER)
FA18 - FIGHTER JET

ARMY Aircraft
==========
A10 WARTHOG - TANK KILLER
AH-1 Cobra - Attack Helicopter
UH-60A Black Hawk Helicopter
OH-58D Kiowa Warrior armed scout helicopter

There are more weapons, but this is a good start. The special forces of all branches of the military have speacialized weapons. Things like MP5 (9mm automatic), glock pistols etc...

Hope this helps
