Sidearms or handguns include revolvers and semi-automatic and full automatic pistols.

Shoulder arms are made up of rifles, submachine guns, full automatic weapons, and the like. Assault rifles normally can be fired as both semi- and full automatic weapons. Sniper rifles are often "bolt action" and empty shells must be ejected and new shells chambered by manual means. A carbine is a lighter, shorter, and often less accurate type of rifle.

A machine gun is a full automatic weapon, often too heavy or awkward to fire from a hand-held position. If you can easily carry it and fire somewhat accurately from shoulder or waist, it would usually be considered a submachine gun. Larger caliber (heavy) machine guns were often water cooled but few are now manufactured now. Instead, they are able to disperse more heat by using better materials and construction, plus may have replaceable barrels that are exchanged before warping occurs.

A subcategory of the machine gun is the Gatling gun. Originally hand-cranked and mounted on wheels, technological advances allowed them to be mounted in ships and aircraft. Possessing three or more rotating barrels, these weapons can fire large rounds at an extremely high rate because each barrel is allowed to cool between rounds. Some of these may be armed with rounds composed of depleted uranium, which is much lower in radioactivity than U-238. Two-thirds more dense than lead, high velocity DU rounds are used to penetrate dense armor, reinforced concrete, and the like.

Next up are the "big boys," the artillery. Among them are the cannons, howitzers, and mortars. While the lines blur, a cannon is normally a highly charged weapon that is pointed directly at its target or aimed at only a slight trajectory. Howitzers generally possess shorter barrels and are normally fired in a higher arc than are cannon, although they may be aimed directly at close targets should need arise. Mortars are usually even smaller and shot at an even higher trajectory. They are often portable and carried by infantry and marines. Their advantage is that they can drop explosives over high walls or into deep trenches and the like.

The various rocket propelled weapons range from bazookas and other shoulder held launchers to large recoilless rifles and other weapons mounted on vehicles, ships, and aircraft. Some of these rocket weapons can be aimed after launch, either optically or through a wired or wireless connection and range from individually carried units to larger vehicle mounts. They may be steered after launch in order to hit moving targets. Originally effective only against ground forces, technology now allows them to be used as anti-aircraft weapons.

The shotgun may be used at times and many grenade launchers, both rifle mounted and separately carried, shoot not only explosive charges but also buckshot. Even larger bore weapons may be turned into giant "shotguns," either by loading them hundreds of pellets or by incorporating exploding shells that release shrapnel or flak upon detonation.

    Well, if this helps:

Sub-machine guns fire a smaller projectile at a greatly increased rate. I believe the standard round is a .45?

Assault rifle covers A LOT but I can tell you that they fire larger bullets but at a reduced rate. Many are also simply semi-automatic. The most common military assault rifle I believe is the M-16. The most common round is a .223.

The most common assault rifle on earth is the AK47. It fires a 7.62×39 projectile. It is far superior to the M16 in firepower and most importantly, reliability. It fires fully automatic or semi automatic. A sub machine gun usually fires a pistol round. Like the .45 Thompson, or the various 9mm variants like the UZI.
