Such as the MP5 or the Colt/M16

The MP5 N was developed specifically for the Navy. It’s just the way the military wanted it and then they named it Navy.

Probably holds up better in a near salt water environment (guns and everything rusts out faster near the ocean)

Whatever they want it to be. The Army and Navy both let contracts with long lists of requirements. The DOD likes to keep things simple when possible, and the costs are often less when everybody’s using the same thing, but naval requirements are often different. One example is that the Navy retains a fair number of M16A3′s, not found in substantial numbers in the Army. They buy them, of course, because they find them more useful for their needs.
