Actually, there is only one restriction in Texas for keeping a loaded rifle or shotgun. You may no longer engage in "public display" of a long gun. This means that you can no longer keep your long gun in a rack mounted up by the back glass of your pickup truck…a la Bubba.
You can have any loaded long gun any other place in your vehicle, including next to you on the passenger seat. There is no differentiation between loaded and unloaded.
For example, 6 months ago, a guy w/an AR-15 on the passenger seat of his pickup truck was doing just such a thing when some punks on I-10 in Houston drove up next to him and shot out his window w/a realistic looking BB gun. Bubba got scared and opened-up with the AR, killing one of the idiots. No charges filed.
Now, there is one obscure Texas game law that can get you a $200 fine. If you drive out the woods with a loaded weapon in your vehicle, a game warden will cite as soon as you pull it out of the car to go hunting (trunk included).

An AR isn’t an assault rifle. When it comes to questions that could land me in prison, I’d contact local LE rather than ask the internet. Lots of yahoo’s around here.

I won’t do as others here do and correct you for calling a non-selective fire gun an assault rifle. Frankly, I’m sick of hearing this. In TX, the only law is that the gun has to be unloaded. That’s it.

well if you legally own the gun and it;s unloaded out of reach and the ammo is in the glove box then you good to go.

Talk to the sheriff or Police. There are state laws and then there are city ordinances. They can be in conflict.

AR-15 ain’t no assault rifle
In Colorado as long as it is visible you can keep it in your car. It can have fully loaded mags in it as long as there in no round in the chamber.
I really don’t advise keeping an AR-15 in your car visible just because People might try to steal it.
I keep a rem 870 and an AR-15 in my trunk but I have a
Concealed Carry Permit

you just need the permit showing you paid the level 3 tax and have it in a appropriate case, and your fine, just have it in your trunk and only tell the officer if they ask about it, randomly telling them about it can make them ask more questions.

IT IS NOT AN ASSAULT RIFLE. DOES IT HAVE A SELECT FIRE SWITCH? NO, IT’S AN AR15. All you would have to say is rifle, or AR15. I don’t quite know why you would need to carry it, and don’t know if you can. Go ask google and see what TX gun laws are.

You transport it in your car like any other rifle. An old hunting law requires rifles to be unloaded in a vehicle. This was so people wouldn’t be tempted to hunt from inside of their vehicles.
