What are the regulations for bringing your own gun into the military?

September 6th, 2010 by eranio

I heard that they have a list of approved guns for people who want to do this. Well I want to bring a S&W 1911 instead of using their 9mm beretta. I’m pretty sure they’ll let me considering they used to use Colt 1911s not too long ago.

Well the 1911 shoots 45ACP rounds, and I’m pretty sure the military doesn’t have any weapons that shoot this, so how are they going to supply me with ammo? Do I have to call my mom and tell her to go out and buy 8 cases of 45ACP rounds and send them to Iraq?

First of all, you probably can’t mail ammo to Iraq. Even if it made it past the postal service, mail over there is stored in sweltering heat in a shipping container until its full, then delivered. So it might combust and somebody could get hurt.

I think your best bet would be just to ask your unit admin, since whatever you find out here will likely have to go through them anyway.

    government issue only

A gun is just about useless without ammo. You are better off sticking with the GI guns so you can get the GI ammo…otherwise, like you said, you’ll be buying your own ammo…..

    You heard wrong.

Sorry to burst your bubble, but you are not allowed to bring any of your own weapons into a combat zone, not even a boot knife technically.

No, you may not bring your personal firearm. You will use the weapon provided for you by whichever branch of the Armed Forces you enter. And you will use it in the manner prescribed, not as you’d choose to use it.
Talk to your local Marine Corps recruiter. He or she will set you straight and prepare you for your visit to Parris Island. You’ll have the time of your life, I promise…

    1. you have to get thru boot camp and thru your career training
    2. you have get approval from your c.o. and base commander
    3. you have to show that there is a reason you NEED to switch weapons.
    4. the military will teach you the difference between your GUN and your WEAPON (or you can watch "Full Metal Jacket")
    5. the military very rarely will make exceptions, they want to keep everything simple….same weapons, same ammo, same issues, same maintanance.

If you supply your own weapon you supply your own ammo its to much for the gov. to try to keep a stock of every type of ammo ever made my brother in law is there now ive heard nothing of the kind being able to take your own weapons!!!

I think the regulations say that you’ll have a nice room at Leavenworth if you use anything other than a government owned weapon and ammunition…

You cannot take personal firearms with you, you will be charged for attempting to do so.

You must use what is issued to you for several reasons.

The only personal weapons that I was allowed to have as an infantryman in the USMC was a K-Bar fighting knife that our commander allowed us to have. That meant that if we wanted we could go buy a standard K-Bar fighting knife and carry it with us if we werent issued one. My personal weapon that was issued to me was a M-16a2, so I had an issued bayonet for it, and carried a K-Bar as well.

My unit also allowed us to carry personal folding knives.

Having a personal firearms would be a very big deal, if you managed to sneak one in someone would find out and you would get into big trouble more than likely.

Good luck trying to sneak one in, more than likely everything your taking with you will be checked about 5 different times before you even get boots on the ground.

You may store weapons on base/post in the armory but you may not carry your own weapon.

You can have your own Weapon in the states and the military will keep it in the arms room for you.

You can NOT bring your own personal Weapon to war.

That is a violation of CENTCOM General Order 1a.

The only exception are General Officers side arms. (when someone is promoted to Brigadier General they are issued a pistol that they will keep when they retire)
