I’m 18, no criminal record.
Do you need a certificate of some sort just to purchase a gun? i don’t intend to hunt only to shoot targets at the range,

No you dont need any permit to purchase a rifle or shotgun in Minnesota. All you need is the money to purchase. You do an instant background check when you purchase the gun and all that is the dealer makes a call to check your background and since you say no criminal record then this should be no problem.
For handguns thats a little bit different. You would either need a purchase permit or a conceal carry permit. Both are obtained from your local sheriff. The purchase permit is free and good for one year. The conceal carry permit is good for 5 years but you need to take a safety class before the sheriff would issue that. Since your 18 then you wont be able to purchase handguns until your 21 but I thought I should mention about handguns.
