IW/Individual Weapon means the standard rifle issued to troops. Everyone learns this weapon in basic training, regardless of the job they will eventually perform.

Virtually all military ammo designations from the last 50 years use metric measurements. In this case, it’s referring to the 5.56x45mm cartridge, which was originally developed for the M16 rifle in the late 50s. 5.56mm is the approximate measurement of the barrel’s bore, and also the diameter of the bullet. The brass case is 45mm long. This cartridge is known commercially as .223 Remington. Virtually all NATO and Western countries use the 5.56mm cartridge as their standard issue military rifle cartridge. Most of the rest of the world uses the 7.62x39mm round, most commonly used in the AK series of assault rifles. Russia changed to a smaller caliber, 5.45x39mm, in 1974, to "keep up" with the US, but most Eastern Bloc, Middle Eastern, and African countries kept the 7.62×39.

The term "assault rifle" has come to mean a select-fire (i.e., it has a switch to select either semi-automatic or fully-automatic fire), detachable-magazine-fed rifle using an intermediate-power cartridge.

Australia and New Zealand use a version of the Austrian Steyr AUG (Armee Universal Gewehr – "Universal Army Rifle") as their standard military rifle, with the exception of their special forces, who use M16 variants.

The weapon fires a 5.56mm projectile. It is a rifle type firearm, made to be used with both hands and has the capability to fire semi-automatically or automatically.

It’s a Steyr Aug 5.56 mm Rifle. 5.56 mm is just .223 in metric terms. Assault rifle just means that it’s a clip fed rifle that can fire either single shots (semi-automatic) when the trigger is pulled or the trigger can be held down and fire several shots (full-automatic).

The barrel and the chamber of the weapon are engineered to accomodate a 5.56 millimeter (approximately 0.219 inch, or .223 caliber) diameter projectile.

Assault rifle is the designation given to rifles that can fire rapid, or in some cases, continuous bursts of projectiles with a single trigger squeeze.

On second thought, never mind. Read the post above mine.

"assault rifle" is the style of the rifle–usually bears a striking resemblance to a military rifle. The Steyr is a British made rifle, that fires a .223 caliber/5.56mm bullet. This is a common NATO round, and matches the popular M-4/M-16 rifle the US military carries. Cyclic rate of fire varies around 900 rounds per minute, with average velocity near 2200 feet per second with a 62 grain bullet. There are scores of ballistic tables for the 5.56mm bullet, and civilian versions of Steyrs can be found around $1500 for semiautomatic only versions. Fully automatic versions are more like $16,000-20,000 each. Hope this helps.
