Straight gas or gas piston operated….?
Straight gas requires the spent gas of the round cycling back to throw the bolt open, gas piston uses spent gas to push a piston back and operate the bolt. Straight gas is a dirtier method than the gas piston.

The rifle is powered by the gas from firing a round.

Basically, it means the rifle is semi-automatic. The gases released from a fired shell are routed to cause the bolt to retract, expel the empty cartridge, and load a new cartridge from the magazine making the rifle ready to fire again.

are you talking about airsoft or real guns? in real guns it means the hot gasses from the bullet are used to push the bolt back and cycle the next shot, in airsoft it means you need co2 cartridges or green gas i think it is called

the recoil of the round shoots through the chamber, knocks the shell out, and reloads another to do it all over again, its as simple as that. so it doesn’t use any fuel at all to operate, =]. and yes that is a very misunderstood situation. hope i helped

you pour gas in the mag and shoot…ok all joking aside, all guns are gas powered. the expanding gas released from the powder burning is what pushes the bullet out of the barrel. in the case of some semi-autos(and full autos) the gas is bled off near the end of the muzzle and pushes back the bolt. some guns use a gas tube piston and some don’t depending on the gun

Not ‘powered by gas’ , "gas operated".
Some of the gas generated by the powder is vented into a mechanism
that operates the action to load the next round.

When you say gas operated there are several types. The main thing is that an auto loading gun is operated by allowing gas to come from a port hole in the barrel, and drive back to the action through a tube to the receiver, and push back the bolt. This in turn will eject the spent shell, and the return spring will push the bolt forward to feed another round. This type of gas operation is called a direct gas impingement system. This is the system found in AR style rifles. AK’s are similar with the exception that the gas drives a piston that in turn pushes the bolt back. This system keeps hot gases out of the receiver.
ALL SEMI GUNS ARE NOT GAS OPERATED. Although it is the most popular in rifles, the majority of pistols are Blow-back, or Delayed Blow-back. Also some auto shotguns, as well as rifles are inertia driven, and some are direct recoil operated.
All have pros and cons, but a gas operation, if kept clean will digest all sorts of loads, hot or low recoil.
Now you can post quaestions about what the other types are.
Hope this helps.
