What guns for the US Military?
Fighting boredom here.
Okay, here’s the scenario. The DOD has been reading your answers on the hunting section of YA and they were so impressed that they decided to hire you as their small arms consultant to completely redo their small arms inventory based on your recommendation.
So, what do you tell them? What rifle, handgun and calibers do they get? Don’t worry about money because Ben Bernanke said he will print whatever is needed. He’s got your back on this.
Great stuff everyone, and yes, if you think the current inventory is tops then let’s hear it.

first…the standard rifle
A Garand action built around a 6MM cartridge similar to what Garand built the M1 around in the first place.
The actual rifle I’d offer would be similar to a Ruger Mini 14 with a little more substantial stock. All would be set up to feed with stripper clips and the bayonet would be bigger than a steak knife
I can live with the M9 pistol… but I’d change the spec back to 45 ACP… screw NATO
For other MOS’s that cant use a auto pistol… (K9 guys and helio pilots and other aviation crews)… 3 inch SW heavy BBL K frames in ,357… even in FMJ that a good pistol to have in a pinch.
SOG keeps the current inventory of Barrets and Remington based sniper rifles
Shotguns… the M590′ gets it done.. why change?
Hand guns would all be smith and wesson… M4s and M16A2 are the bast!
The current M4/M16 chambered in 6.8spc or in .270. If we’re still limited to ball ammo then the handgun would have to go back to the 1911, either a ‘loaded’ Springfield or a Kimber.
There’s nothing wrong with the M-16 and M-4 except that they’re on AR-15 frames. Switch to AR-10, and you could fit more than the 6.8 SPC into the chamber. Then, since our President is busy apologizing to the world about America’s past sins, we could apologize to the British for squashing Enfield’s excellent 280 cartridge 60 years ago, which led us down two wrong paths (7.62×51, then 5.56×45), and we could have a decent battle cartridge. As a matter of fact, we could contract with Hornady for some of their proprietary propellant loadings and possibly even make do with a slightly shorter case. Part of the apology would also be to supply UK with the same rifle, so their squaddies could gracefully retire those hideous bullpup SA-80’s and have something that actually shoot when (and only when!) you press the trigger.
My thinking is similar with handguns, though they’re much less important. Several agencies within the military already have good modern 45 ACP handguns, and there’s always the problem of people who simply will never learn to handle a large-bore handgun. There’s no need to change the handguns, simply let everyone have his choice of what’s already available. It’s the computer age, so past worries about logistics for handgun cartridges shouldn’t be that big a problem now.
Main battle rifle, something with a 30 cal. Maybe take a hint from the soviets and use their 7.62×39.
Pistols, go back to the 1911 45acp.
shotguns, Keep what we have.
M-14 rifle
M1911A1
.308 winchester
talking to old marines that is what they say that those were the best weapons that you can get for the military
a AR-15 rifle in 6.8 or interchangeable between 5.56 NATO and
7.62 x 39. have the soliders rated on handguns and see if they can handle a .45 ACP, if not then give them a 9mm. either a glock, taurus, or a springfield XD.
