What happened to the od world war 2 M1 Garand rifles?

January 20th, 2010 by eranio

I have recently started collecting old military rifles and I have came across everything except the old M1 Garand’s. Does anyone one know if they were ever re-sold in the us market? It’s funny that you can find Mauser’s, Nagants, Rubin’s, Enfield’s but I can’t seem to find a M1 surplus.

You have several things working against you. Most people keep the ones they find, there were never a whole lot on the market to begin with, there were not as many made as other guns of the era. Plus when its replacement came many saw the cutting saws. There is no such thing as surplus. And the CMP ones are of poor quality.

What you can find are high priced. It’s supply and demand. I do know a place who always has many M1 garands on hand but they run $800-$1000 and he won’t ship them out.

The M1 Garand is still available for sale at the Civilian Marksmanship Program CMP, check their website they sell real military surplus M1 Garands to the American people.

I was at the Pennsylvania Gun Collectors Asssociation show today. Garands for sale by the hundreds. I bought mine through DCM (now CMP) 20 years ago or more. M1 Garands have been available forever. Go on the CMP website and see how to qualify to buy one direct from Uncle Sam.

They had a dozen or so at our last gun show. I was going to buy one my self until I spotted a nice Broom handle Mauser.

There are plenty………one problem…… is that they are collectible and expensive. You won’t see them in a pile like some 79.00 mosins. Most good ones start at 1k and go over 2k.

    Much good info. above.

Many (hundreds of thousands to millions?) were given to our allies after WW II. Approximately 6.5-7 million M1 rifles were built, a large quantity of these are still in circulation. In fact, South Korea is about to return 86,000 or so M1 rifles to the U.S.

As time goes by, more and more M1′s are finding their way back home.

They can be valuable and are very collectible, but well used CMP rifles are available for under $500.

I have an M1, it is my favorite rifle…period.

ed: By the way, those South Korean rifles will most likely be sold as surplus. Rare event, that. These should go on sale sometime this year. Don’t expect a dirt cheap price.

Since these are still legal and very good for NRA Highpower Rifle Competition – they can be found and are usually in pretty nice shape.

You need to be very careful when buying one. There is not shortage of demilled receivers that have been welded back together and sold as a normal rifle. Or rifles that have been rebarrelled and other strange modifications.

There are many good books about the M1 Garrand available at http://www.midwayusa.com and other sources. You should read up on them before spending a cent on one.

At Gun shows in Pa. Allentown Agriculture Hall,in Philadelphia National Guard Armory, not only the dealers have them, people are privately selling for as little as $700 and very often a history of the rifle and how they come to have it and more.google gun shows you state.

you already have a bunch of good answers but I’ll give you this bit of info too. Never once have I found a better deal at a gunshow or a gunshop on an M1 Garand than I have gotten at the CMP. tthat’sthe only place I would ever buy one. some sell for as low as $495! (nobody can beat that). Check out the the M1 carbines and 1903s too

The last gun show I attended had M-1 Garand rifles available from several vendors. Prices were higher than what a person would pay from the CMP.

If you’re willing to pay more, you could try to purchase an M-1 Garand rifle at a local gun store, local gun show or from vendors like Fulton Armory.

They are still out there. The price of one depends on many variables.

Did you check the Civilian Marksmanship Program? Most you’ll find we loaned to other country over lend-lease programs and contracts. There out there tough just have to look. Almost every gun shop I go to has at least one in stock.

the government only lets CMP re-sell the garands.you must buy the rifle from the CMP. But its possible to buy it used from autionarms, gunsamerica, or the local gunshop.
