What is a good inexpensive military bolt action rifle?

December 3rd, 2009 by eranio

Hi, What is a good one with the following criteria:
1) Military, bolt action
2) less then 0 out the door
3) a fairly good shooter
Also a "plus" would be if the reciever is over 100 years old, so I wouldn’t have to incur the additional cost of the FFL transfer

Thanks!

Any of the Mosin-Nagants pretty much fit that bill although it’s a bit tougher to find the pre-FFL variants. They tend to be more expensive.

Same for the Mausers. I’ve seen some NICE pre-FFL Mausers for sale (mail order, oddly enough), but they’re pricey. They’re also borderline collector’s type weapon.

You can get about any of the "normal" surplus rifles for under $300. It’s just a matter of what you want to do with it.

None of them save for maybe some of the Swiss rifles are particularly accurate in comparison to modern "deer" rifles. Some of them CAN be made more accurate/consistent, but generally that takes lots of money and work.

If you want a good kicking around rifle, the M-N’s are tough to beat. I have an M-N, an 8mm Mauser, and a nice Lee-Enfield, but the M-N sees the most rounds. I DO like the other rifles, though.

Mosin-Nagants and Mausers of any variant are great, check out your local flea market and you should be able to pick one up for less than $150 if your lucky and can haggle.. If not, Im sure the seller will be delighted with $300.

PS. No feds at the jockey lot.. nobody will even know you have it, Just bring cash

Mausers are all over the place as caliber and design go. To say Mauser without more information simply tells you the design of the action, and almost all bolt-action rifles have Mauser patents involved in their manufacture. That said, a M98 Mauser in 8×57 or 7×57 may come in at $300 or less. The M96 Swede Mauser is also a fine rifle, and shoots the venerable old 6.5×55 round which is an excellent choice for hunting and target as well. I believe it to be the most accurate of the milsurp rifles available. Smith’s Book of Rifles says of the 6.5×55: "it’s accuracy is superlative, and it’s stopping power more than adequate". A SMLE (Lee Enfield) in .303 Britt is also a good milsurp rifle for hunting. Good luck. J
