I would say the most common are the M16-A1 or the M4. us army uses those. i consider them one of the best. the M16-A1 round is not designed for through and through shots, but to bounce around inside and do as much damage as possible before exiting the body.

Without a doubt it would be the AK47 which has been in use since 1947 (thus the number) all around the world and is still in very wide use. It is a very accurate and dependable weapon that will not jam easily and has a good rate of fire. I faced it in Viet Nam and it has a very distinctive sound that I will never forget and I doubt any Viet Nam vet will either.

As much as I like my AR-15, the AK-47 is probably the most proliferated "assault" weapon on the planet.

They are in every corner of the world and have a reputation for being reliable as hell, cheap and simple to use, clean, repair etc..

Most Soviet Bloc European countries, as well as communist Asian or former communist countries use, or have used a variation of the AK at some point.

So basically everyone but "us" (US) literally.

The AK-47 is extremely reliable and cheap to produce. The Russians have been using this design for half a century. It has to be the most prevalent military rifle in the world.
