What is the best all around sniper rifle ever?
My friend says M109 barret, but I think its too big and heavy. It kicks ass, but its not mobile. For a defenceive role, it would own I guess. I thought the M40 seems like a good all arounder, decent round, lite, portable, accurate. Its flaw is a bolt action. What do you all think?

A bolt action sniper rifle is the best that you can get.
The bolt action is much stronger and permits much more accuracy and heavier loads than the other types of actions.
Remember the role of a sniper rifle is very different than the role of something like an assault rifle which depends on a high rate of fire at relatively short range.
The sniper rifle is designed for high accuracy at long range.
That requires heavy loads and a strong action.
The longest sniper shots have been made with the 50 Caliber weapon.
The next best is something on the order of a 30.06 bolt action rifle or a Winchester 700 magnum.

If I cant get a Barret, I’ll take a 30.06, if lacking both of those, Steyr Scout…

I personally like the M-14. It’s more of a marksmen rifle than a sniper rifle (shorter effective range), but you get additional volume of fire with it, making it a good "all-around". Though the new SR-25 is pretty good too.

I have used the old Springfield in 30-06, which was a fine shooting rifle. But I had a M24 (basically a Remington 700…highly modified) in .300 Winchester Magnum in Tal Afar back in 2005. It was a very fine rifle as well. The Barrett we had was great for working from a static position; we reached out 800 meters a couple days and really serviced some targets. But the Barrett is a semi-auto and, generally speaking, the extra moving parts make just about any semi-auto less accurate than a bolt-action in the same caliber. So take your pick.
By the way, asking that question is like asking who is the best (name a position) in (name a sport) ever. All you will get is an opinion. And everyone has one…just like they have an a**hole.

my choice of sniper would be a M39 enhanced marksman rifle, very durable light weight and reliable but i would only choice this if i was in a close situation lets say a few hundred meters, if i was shooting 1km plus i would probably choice a accuracy international AW50 beautiful weapon.
i have shot both these weapons plus many more and these are just my opinion every one has there own opinions so if you really want to know what the best sniper rifle for you is, you will have hunt around and see what you think.

No such thing. I do not subscribe to the idea there is a "best" anything. It all depends on the situation and who is using it.
It’s kind of like asking "what is the best car"? Ask 10 people and you will get 10 answers because not everyone has the same idea of what "best" means to them.
