Any H&K model
Vet-USAF
in the us, its probably the m4 because its an all around good rifle. in france, the best, hands down is the FAMAS
I personally am best with am M16 variant, say an M16A2 or an M4 but an AK is hard to find fault with. It’s ugly and no tech marvel but it seems to work in any situation it is put into.
is suggest singular, rifles suggests plural, which do you want to know?
The one that you trained the most with.
American M16 and M4 Carbine
German HK G36
Russian AK 103
French FAMAS
Russian AN-94
Personal preference. Best bullpup (magazine behind the trigger) is the Steyr AUG. In service with Austria and Ireland.
The best conventional assault rifle is the German G36. "Best" is a very tricky adjective. It really depends on who does the shooting. Today, most are 5.56 NATO, but old G3’s FAL’s and M14’s are 7.62 NATO. It all depends on your own preferences. Personally, I think G36 and AUG for new rifles, but for history you have to love the Sturmgewehr 44, the world’s first assault rifle. Actually I like having a heavy round, so I’d take a G3 or M14 over anything 5.56, but thats just me!
If you recommend an AK-47 you need your head examined! You can barely hit the broad side of a barn, and the rifle is getting way too old! You are much better off with a more accurate rifle. Spray’n'pray is a bad tactic, and thats all AK-47’s are used for. If you want Russian I’d say AK-74 or maybe the new 108. I’ll stick with German engineering!
The Aussie is right on some things, like 5.56 is weak. Thats why I say 7.62 NATO. H&K G3, old but still good!
M16
I have to agree with dynasty here,if the hand is good and you are well trained with the rifle you are using, small differences amount to nil if your training is more than sufficient.
The AK-47 is the ideal weapon for combat. I never jams, it is ideal for any terrain. The only downside is it’s accuracy (but how many snipers will be using this as their weapon of choice)
There are so many assault rifles around that very few people would have tried enough of them to declare any single one "the best" and so we tend to answer based on what we know and/or what we like.
Personally I’d be happy with the South African R4 series of rifles. They’re based on the Israeli Galil but toughened up to deal with the harsher conditions in southern Africa, the Galil itself is based on the AK so it already has good tolerance for abuse. However it’s 5.56mm, I prefer a heavier projectile so something firing either the 7.62×39mm or 9×39mm Soviet ammo would do me until the 6.8×43mm comes into widespread service. Any 7.62×39mm AK is okay as long as it’s not too worn out and actually aimed properly but I’d go for a Finnish version, the RK 95 TP. Hmm two rifles based on the AK – for most infantrymen, most firefights occur at a distance of less than 150m and you’re aiming at centre of seen mass, i.e. the torso because it’s the biggest target, so the lesser accuracy of an AK isn’t actually as bad as it sounds.
However I think I’d really go for the Russian AS ‘Val’ because it’s a suppressor equipped assault rifle firing 9×39mm ammo.
As for the Austrian AUG, they’re nice but the sight fogs up in humid conditions and they’re 5.56mm. The British L85 is okay but a bit too fiddly for my liking and they heat up the forestock badly in rapid fire… and it’s 5.56mm. The US M16 series has a bad design for its gas system that blows too much crap back into the chamber… and it’s 5.56mm
Germany’s G36 is sexy but it’s 5.56mm. The Swiss SG550 is very nice but expensive, you pay out for Swiss precision and… it’s 5.56mm. Germany’s HK417 could be nice but 7.62×51mm is too powerful to qualify for Assault Rifle. The Russian AN-94 could be interesting, it’s 2-rd burst fires fast enough so you don’t feel the recoil until the projectiles have left the barrel but it’s ergonomics are pretty bad and it’s 5.45×39mm which is no better than 5.56mm.
StG44 would be cool for historical reasons but it uses a single-stack mag so it’s too long for when you go prone. The first assault rifle, the Federov Avtomat would also be cool for historical reasons but it doesn’t look "assault rifle" enough to be cool enough but with only 3200 ever made, you’d be the only kid on the block with one!
Most assault rifles have good and bad points, I’ve listed a few of the bad but generally I’m against 5.56mm so my answer is based on that more than anything else.
