Best bullpup (magazine behind the trigger) is the Steyr AUG. In service with Austria and Ireland. The best conventional assault rifle is the German G36. "Best" is a very tricky adjective. It really depends on who does the shooting. Today, most are 5.56 NATO, but old G3's FAL's and M14's are 7.62 NATO. It all depends on your own preferences. Personally, I think G36 and AUG for new rifles, but for history you have to love the Sturmgewehr 44, the world's first assault rifle. Actually I like having a heavy round, so I'd take a G3 or M14 over anything 5.56, but thats just me! If you recommend an AK-47 you need your head examined! You can barely hit the broad side of a barn, and the rifle is getting way too old! You are much better off with a more accurate rifle. Spray'n'pray is a bad tactic, and thats all AK-47's are used for. If you want Russian I'd say AK-74 or maybe the new 108. I'll stick with German engineering!
