SKS and Nagant variations as noted good choices. You said ‘Cheap’- Dicks in Madison has M44s for $69.00. Modern ammo? Maybe check out the X-Israeli or Spanish rebuilt K98 Mauser’s in .308/7.62 NATO. Serial numbers probably won’t match but the new barrels are usually fairly accurate. A Spanish FR8 (Fusil Reformato? pattern 8) for $125/150.00 would give you rear sight same as G3, near new barrel and late model K98 action. Mitchel’s is asking $200.00 for X-Yugoslav in 8x57mm M48s in fair condition, $299.00 for near new. The rebuilt Israelis can go from $75.00 to $200.00, finish may vary, bolts vary but all with .308 barrels done 1970s -+. some heavy barrels about 1990. Mixed origin of original receiver, some as rebuilt as ‘sporter’, sights may vary from original barrel mount remarked to a FN FAL pattern at rear of receiver. These are suggested for your request for ‘modern’ ammunition- the .308.

    Yugoslavian SKS. M/66

They are the current SKS imports already in semi-auto so there is no "de" militarizing and they use plentiful surplus and current production 7.62×39 ammo.

SKS or Mosin Nagent sound like they would fit your bill perfectly.

I like the SKS and AK47 the best, but an M1 Garand would be a blast too!

I agree with the one person that’s above me. I’s pick an M1 Garand. I really like that rifle.

WASR 10 is the best bang for your buck. Starting at $199. It is a 7.62×39 cheap version of the ak-47. Ammo is as cheap as $4 for 20 rounds and takes most ak mags and drums.

barrett m468, this is the gun thats gonna replace the M-16 and the M-4, all you gotta do to get this one is pay the hefty price tag on it, $2700, its still not as bad as what i put out for the M82A1 rifle

The best? I don’t know if I can tell you which is the absolute best but for my money I’d say either the M1 Garrand or the 1903 A3 Springfield. Both are chambered for the .30-06 round and are usually available through the CMP (Civilian Marksmanship Program) at a darned good price. Check with the CMP for price and availability and to see if you are eligible for purchase of any of these guns.

I like the M-14 & the FAL myself, but they are not cheap. Both use the modern 7.62×51 NATO (.308 Winchester) ammo. Great quality on both.

a m44 nagant is a ok rifle that will shoot. the fit and finish is not what you would find on a curent production rifle but they are a plast to shoot and ammo can be had for next to nothing.
