What is the best modern Assault Rifle?

December 5th, 2009 by eranio

In individual performance what modern assault rifle is the best overall based only on such things as accuracy, magazine size, weight, and length.

P.S. and don’t include the AK-47 just because it is easy to use and make.
If you could take only one to a war with every imaginable environment, and cost was no issue.

    Hi

For military usage I like the French FAMAS. In most cases, range is not really a consideration. Were that the case everyone would still be using the 30/06 power cartridges instead of the varmint rounds.

The bullpup design gives very good handling. I wish that the British EM2 had gone forward.

your question has too many variables because in different situations one would be better than another such as switching from house to house fighting to a more long range situation.

House to house an MP5 is a great weapon, but take it to a situation where long range is required then it is almost useless. an m-16a2 can hit accurately at 500 meters with just the iron sights but in house to house it is to long for enclosed spaces and makes it hard to bring up to bear on a target.

I like the M-4 it can do both and uses a light round increasing the combat load and it has many modifications that can make it mision ready for just about anything you need to do

Sig just came out with a new weapon that is a hybryd of the m4 and ak47. They took the best of both and combined them. They use the gas system of the AK becuase it is more reliable and the bolt group of the m4 and they even made some improvments that diverge from both weapons. I haven’t fired it yet but I have seen and held it and it seems ok, a bit heavy and not real comfortable compared to the m4 in the eye relief area

Also the price tag on the civilian version (bare bones) is 1800.00 which means the full auto or 3 round burst would be much higher

There is no best modern assault rifle. There are trade offs with every design.

In general you want to make the weapon as light as possible, but this results in increased recoil impulse and impacts the weapons durability.

The size of the cartridge is important too depending on the mission. In general you want as large a caliber as you can use, but of course this has the drawbacks of fewer bullets, weight, etc.

Length of the weapon generally makes accuracy better, but it also makes its mobility more difficult. Magazine size allows for longer sustained figure but impacts weight, the list goes on.

There is no best assault rifle just like there is no best pasta sauce.

US Spec Ops has gone with the FN SCAR. The rest of the Army has NOT.

US Army’s been looking for more than 5 years to answer your question and declares that there’s nothing that much better than the M-16/4.

id say the m16. Its relitivly cheap its sterdy, good mag size 30 rounds a mag. Very light considering its long barrel and the length is long but good range. Ohh and accuracy is very good!
