What is the best rifle I can buy for $1,000?

July 3rd, 2010 by eranio

I was going to invest in a new .308 Winchester rifle and have ,000 to spend (not including scope, bipod, etc.). I have heard good and bad about the Remington 700 and want some suggestions. I was particularly interested in a rifle that the military uses, but will settle for something else. Thanks.

    Look at these rifles here…….

    Remington 700 SPS Varmint…….

    Remington 700 VTR ( I have one of these)…..

and this was introduced in the recent past…. A Remington 700 Milspec 5R…. This looks interesting!

All of these rifles are priced around a $1000 or less…. I have a VTR in .308…. Is it super super accurate?.. I am actually not sure… In the article above the writer says its not a tack driving accurate rifle…. Since I do not shoot at paper I can’t really say how accurate it is. That’s not my thing… I DO target shoot at steel gongs / plates at 300, 400 yards and occasionally longer distances and I can tell you this – It certainly is up to the task for that….

Your choice of the .308 cartridge if this is for target shooting or medium size game is a good one…
Be sure to look over this .308 cartridge guide…..

The ammo is certainly cheap in bulk…..

Its one of the most popular, if not the most popular bolt actions in the USA for a reason. Get a SPS Tactical with 20" barrel and spend the rest on quality optics and lots of ammo. The SPS Tactical may not have the best quality stock, but its more than enough for hunting and the weekend warrior developing marksmanship skills.

Well, the military uses the Remington 700 with a very expensive scope and stock. So you’re on the right track.

Since Cabela’s sells Model 700 ADLs for $460 with a scope on them, and maybe some of the new models are decent, there is ZERO reason to spend that kind of money on one.Much above $600 I wouldn’t even look twice at a Remington. With CZ,Ruger,Browning,Sako/Tikka,and T/C ICONs available for less than $1000 you are buying better value than a Remington can provide. Heck,I’ve seen Kimbers for $1000,and I would consider that a good investment. I grew up using a Rem 725 BDL Custom, probably the finest rifle Remington even made,so a 700 isn’t some mythical wonder gun to me-in fact they are mid-pack rifles once you start looking at what is out there for your money.
I have Browning A-Bolts in 30-06 and 300 WSM, the 30-06 is almost 20 years old,and both shoot Sub-MOA groups with my hand loads, factory stock with no BOSS,and have never had a lick of trouble. That they are handsome and user friendly are a bonus. I’ve also used CZ 550s,they use a forged action with substantial bridges,Turkish Walnut or Kevlar stocks and have some of the best triggers available. CZ/BRNO are the rifles many professional hunters in Africa trust with their life. The Sako A7 is a very nice entry level rifle from another world class maker, and though not as prestigious as a Model 85,they are certainly fine rifles.
And yes, there are several Remingtons worth looking at,like the Mountain LSS Stainless,or a VLS;but I certainly wouldn’t spend extra for a current BDL just to get fancy scroll work on the floorplate and a piece on ebony on the fore end.So, it you really want a Remington,it truly pays to do your research. Look for better barrels,or better stock availability -I love how people spend good money on a Model 700 and then grouse because they have to pay more for a stock that doesn’t feel cheesy.
You certainly don’t have to spend that much on a rifle, some Savages can be exceptional shooters for models much less than $1000. They are using an aluminum bed system in some of their new models that has been getting great reviews. Weatherby Vanguards are a gem of a rifle at $400.
Given the choice of spending $1000 for just a rifle,I know I’d be down at the local place that had the Kimbers, but I’m probably going to spend $500 and get my son a Tikka T3.

I’m going to go with the grain and support the 700. I own a 700 XCR and love it. There is not one bad thing to say about it.

.308 is popular with the military as is .300 Mag in some instances. I prefer my 7mm Rem Mag for my uses.

I’d say a Remington Model 700 Sendero Bull Barrel in .308 Caliber. The military has used this rifle and caliber for sniper use for a long time. Plus the .308 is a easy Caliber to find and has many different bullet weights and since it is a popular round it is a cheaper round compared to others due to sales being made.
