What is the best rifle to get for home security?
I grew up with guns. My father had Rugar, Winchester, some military issue rifles. We had several pistols but I had to give them to my aunt because they are illegal to have in my home state. My grandmother had a rifle that could be used by a woman or a man and had a clean shot and not that much kick back but the rifle was so old it has rusted away and is useless. It had been lost in the basement and ruined.
What would be a good brand of rifle to get that I can purchase that I can use and my girlfriend can use for home security? I was looking into Winchester or Rugar.
I am so dumb. I think the weapon that Nana had must have been a shot gun. I remember Dad showing me how to use it as a kid. That must be it. It was shorter barrel than the weapons he used for hunting that were the rifles.

Buy the Mossberg Maverick in a pump action 12 gauge shotgun and use number 4 bird shot for in home self-defense ammo.*

My personal choice has been a Marlin Guide gun in 45/70. It is compact and plenty of fire power. There is also the intimidation factor, similat to a shotgun, when looking down the business end the Hole Is Enormous.

if your girlfriend is going to use it too you should go with a 20 or 16 gauge pump shotgun, borrow your friends gun and let her shoot it to be sure shes not afraid to shoot

I have quite a few arms but my grab gun is my AR 15 piston 20" overhaul made in the USA 30 round mag> As a shot gun makes a mess> recoil is to much for a girl> And unless pistol griped and 16" barrel too large for in house movement> Just my thought> http://gsetactical.com/index.htm

Home defense? — Consider a shotgun…. The problem with a rifle is that if you miss the bullet can penetrate walls and endanger your neighbors….. You surely have a right to protect yourself and your family but you do not have a right to endanger your neighbors….
I highly recommend the Mossberg 500 shotguns…. Consider a 12 gauge Persuader or Cruiser model…
Take a look….
This one is an 8 shot with a 20 inch barrel…….

Or if your in tighter quarters consider this 6 shot 18 inch barrel model….

Keep it loaded with 2 3/4 inch buckshot…..

I own several police / home defense / security type shotguns and will say the Mossberg 12 gauge shotguns are the most reliable, easy to use, problem free shotgun you could ever buy for home defense……

for home defence look into getting a shotgun. Good decent ones are mossberg 500 series or remington 870…12ga.

just about any 12 gauge shotgun will be what your looking for, nothing is better for home defence like a 12 gauge shotgun. Not only that but the rack of a shotgun gets more people to surrender than anything else.

For home security you should look into getting a shotgun I recomend mossberg.

I agree with the shotgun idea. Rifles aren’t too great for home defense, unless you’re going to be on your roof picking people off from a distance. A shotgun will be much more effective inside your house, and does have a certain intimidation factor. If you can’t get a handgun, go for a mossberg 500 or Remington 870 in a 12 gauge. They’re both great guns for the price, and don’t require aiming like a rifle. With a shotgun, you just have to point. Look for a shorter barrel if its for home defense. Something less than 24 inches will help you pull it around the corner nice and fast. As for the kick, you really shouldn’t worry. One or two shots aren’t going to hurt you, even if you can’t take kick well. Plus, I’d rather have a bruised shoulder than a bullet in my head. Somebody walks in your house, you shoot em dead, the adrenaline won’t let you feel any kick.
May I also suggest you move to a state that doesn’t suck? :
If you insist on a rifle, I agree with aklewis. Marlin lever action in a 30-30, or a nice, short SKS. I saw some cool used SKSs at Cabela’s, real nice and short too. Turns the corner almost as fast as a handgun. However, don’t be mistaken by the feel of a small rifle. The 7.62mm still has some decent kick.
00 or 000 buckshot is definitely the way to go with a shotgun. I suppose number 4 shot wouldn’t be too bad either, but don’t try to shoot somebody with #8 shot or something stupid.

#1 Mossberg 500 12 guage shotgun with a short (18" to 22" barrel)
However, if you want to stick with rifles….
#1 SKS, some decent Yugoslavian versions are being imported.
#2 a lever action 30-30 by marlin, or a used winchester.

I would go with a shotgun too, but the best rifle would be a lever action in 357 or 44 magnum, I would go with the lower velocity heavy bullet loading to avoid over penetration.

Good home defense rifles? I like the AR-15 types and Ruger’s Mini-14. They work and those who claim they are dangerous overpenetrators haven’t actually tested live ammo on a building. The lever action carbine in .357 Mag., .44 Mag., .45 Colt and even .30-30 Win.(only good factory load for fighting is probably the 125gr JHP from Federal). They work have mild to nearly non-existent recoil. As a bonus in certain areas, they look less "evil" and since you can’t even own handguns in your locale they are probably your BEST choice. A .44 Mag. would make a great small or medium game rifle. Even be a decent deer rifle inside 100yds. Fighting loads would be any quality combat type in .38 Special +P, .44 Spec. or the Medium Velocity loads in the magnums.
Add shotguns to the mix & a great choice is one of the combo packages being offered by Remington or Mossberg. They come with a regular bird hunting length choke tube barrel and a 18 or 18.5" plain cylinder bore bbl with a simple bead front site. Unless you live in an apartment I don’t like birdshot for fighting loads. Even then use med-large shot… #2or 4. Otherwise buckshot is the way to go. If your girlfriend or you are recoil sensitive a 20ga is a heck of a good choice.

I keep a Ruger Mini 14 in my closet with a 30 round clip full of 69 grain hollow points that I reloaded. I prefer a rifle over a shotgun for home defense because I don’t need to spray out lots of lead every time i pull the trigger. I’d rather put one bullet where I want it, and then another if needed.
But if you really want to defend your home from invaders get a 10mm Glock like the one in my pocket now…

from what you wrote, i’d recommend a shotgun. 12 gauge are more common for home defense and have more ammo choices including many non-lethal rounds (bean bags, rubber balls). 20 gauge would work great too. it is less powerful and has less choices of ammo. buck shot is a good choice for home defense. Centurion makes one called Multi-Defense Buck which has one 65 caliber ball and 6 #4 buckshot in one round. that would stop just about anything in their tracks. i have a 12 gauge Benelli in the closet and a .40 S&W sigma sitting next to me for home defense, Mossberg is a good brand for home defense guns too.
