what is the difference between civilian guns and military grade guns?

Just wondering what the difference between military grade guns like the Beretta M9 and M14, and their civilian equivalents, the Beretta 92fs and the M1a? I’m thinking Its the magazine size and the fire control on the M14, but maybe it has to do with something in the pistons or bolts.

With pistols there is no difference at all, not mag capacities or anything. With rifles, military combat rifles have full auto capabilities whereas most civilian rifles are semi-auto. Semi-auto military rifles are the same as civilian models as well.
