What is the highest caliber rifle and highest scope you can use in Oregon for hunting?

I want to get the an M21 and it shoots a 7.62×51 NATO (.308 Winchester) and I was curious if I could use it in deer/elk/any type of hunting.
I’m planning on trying to join the Marines in a few years, and I’m curious if I could get some experience in military rifle

If you have no experience in hunting, then a .308 is not such a great cartridge for anything bigger than deer. I would try something like a 7mm magnum, or 30-06 due to rising cartridge prices.

If you want experience with a military cartridge, then a 7.62 in an AR or 5.56 will be great trainer at the range.

I don’t believe there is a limit on scope magnification.

As far as calibers go, a .30 caliber isn’t all that large, especially a short action .308. I live in WA and assume your game laws are pretty much parallel to ours. The largest rifles we can use are black powder. I know little about them to be honest. But I think .50 calibers are pretty common in black powder hunting rifles.

.308′s are good. They should be able to take down any animal in the North America. As far as highest caliber? Not sure but the .577 t-rex is one killer gun. Only practical use for it is to take down elephants. Just search on yahoo video/youtube .577 t-rex recoil. In UT it is not against the law to hunt with that. But then again why would you? As far as I know you can hunt with that gun. And there are no regulations on scope.

caliber wise you can get a .700 Nitro express rifle, which is mostly used for elephant hunting. if you shoot a deer with that you’ll have nothing but 4 legs left of it.

power wise any .50 BMG rifle may be used for hunting. its up to 2x the pwoer of .700 Nitro Express, you’d need to take game like 1000 yards away so they won’t be decimated by the bullet.

scope power- there are no regulations about what kind of optical magnification you may use for hunting.
