I’m pretty sure every country has their own favorite. However, there is a trend of the western ones using 5.56X45mm (.223 is the civilian version of the bullet; they are not interchangeable) and the eastern ones using 7.62X39mm. It’s all just echoes of the cold war.

There are multiple NATO approved rounds. 5.56 (.223) and 7.62 are among those.

  3. ?

  4. Phillis

Heckler & Koch G36 it uses a custom round

I hate the word "assault rifle" didn’t the Clinton Administration, Peta and pot smoking tree huggers come up with that term? I believe it’s the m-16, I don’t know why because it’s a hunk of crap.

The UN is a collection of units from member nations and standards vary.

As a whole the UN piece keepers in the "blue hats" carry the AK-47 in 7.62×39

    "Nato rounds"

Any round that is FMJ or Ball ammo less than 50 cal can be used in direct assault on a person over 50cal must be used in indirect assault (shoot the tree, let the tree explode and kill the guy beside it) opps missed the tree

    5.56 and 7.62 and I too dislike assault rifle…its just a gun.

If you own a civilian AR-15 and you call it an assault rifle then you can dislike that. But a fully capable M-16 that fully auto and meant to kill then is called an assault riffle because your not going to tickle them with it.

well the UN is a mixture of countries and they all use their own weapons. but most of the UN action is performed by the U.S.

The United Nations has no military force. It "borrows" them from its members, who use whatever their individual country uses.

Member nations carry the firearms their individual countries have adopted. Most currently use the AK-47 in 7.62 x 39. Another popular one is the M-16 in 5.56 Nato.
