I know its a state of the art rifle from the ’60s, but what about it makes it used by so many armed forces today? detail please.

Lighter weapon, smaller bullets (makes carrying ammo easier), more accurate, a better maximum effective range, superior gas operation system…
There’s also the cost issue to take into account..it costs under $1,000 to produce one.
Edit:
The weakness of the 5.56 is debateable. The current NATO M855 round uses a steel tip to improve penetration into body armor and a lead core for better penetration into soft targets.
Granted, when you compare it to the M80 used in the M14 rifle, the 5.56 does compare weaker, but if you hit a guy in the right spot it doesn’t matter what you hit him with.
A lot of it comes down to cost though.
Sean..granted the AK won’t jam as much. You could crap down the barrel and it would still shoot. But the AK is not as accurate and has a larger recoil
Chris…the original M16 actually performed rather poorly in wet and humid evironments (the jungle of vietnam). It was originally touted as self-cleaning, thus cleaning kits weren’t issued. Issue cleaning kits and switch from a ball powder to a stick powder and reliability improved.

I don’t like guns and bullets! It is user friendly!!

Because it’s still a very good weapon and there’s so many of them produced that they’re relatively easy to get.

Accuracy baby!

It’s a fairly high-powered weapon with very little kickback, so it makes it easy to use.

durable, accurate, and lost of stopping power. all qualities of a perfect rifle
Sean, FAIL. if the M16 wasn’t a durable and reliable weapon, it couldn’t function in the Jungle(Vietnam) and desert(Iraq). and if its so weak, then y can it kill someone in one shot from over 600 yds out. maybe ur the one thats a child, or maybe ur just stupid

Check out these guns on youtube sometime
AA 12 A fully automatic 12 gauge shotgun
The Taurus Judge pistol that will shoot 410 shells
The Kriss – it is a .45 calibre sub-machine gun one bad machine
Those three should keep you covered.

that i can shoot someone in the head from 500 yards with iron sights..
Most of the problems are caused by idiots that dont clean their rifles and dont know how do simple malfunction drills .

Chris is obviously a child.
It is far from durable.
The 5.56 is crazy weak.
It is not even close to perfect.
Pros
It’s Accurate.
It’s cheap.
It’s American Made.
Chris have you ever even fired a gun? I’ve had it jam on me at least 5 times. Compared to the AK, or the FN SCAR it is far from durable. My father has told me of many instances of him hitting a target in vital areas, and them still fighting.
Mark are you in the Service right now?
Yeah but is it jams 5 times in a day’s shooting session after my former Marine father cleaned it the night before, its poorly designed.

- It is accurate, much more so than the AK-47, especially so under automatic or burst fire and far distances (up to 500 m max effective range)
-Although the 5.56 round is not as large as a 7.62, it is very fast (feet per second) and the bullet "tumbles" upon impact causing massive amounts of damage up penetration
-With proper maintenance, contrary to popular belief, it is a reliable weapon.
- The 5.56 round is smaller therefore allowing the soldier to carry much more ammunition than a larger round
- In the modern force, the M4 Carbine, a smaller, shorter version is becoming the standard issue rifle. It is shorter which allows maneuver in tight areas easier (i.e. entrance into buildings) It also has the capability to have devices attached (i.e. hi tech sites etc.)
- The military is searching for an updated rifle to replace the M16. Although not a bad run for a rifle to have a 50 year life cycle. It will go down in history as one of the best inventions and progression of military technology.

It is also tye US contract with Colt.
Civilians like it because it’s usually a wannabe thing.
They aren’t bad, but the gas rings are weak and go out, they jam easily if not cleaned properly. (which is difficult when you are in a combat situation and under fire.) The magazines have weak springs that lead to misfeeds, etc.
The are however pretty used friendly. Have adjustable sights that allow for proper zeroing of the weapon, are easy to carry and the capability to mount it u with an grenade launcher gives it a lot of power.
It is accurate at longer distances and the tumbling action of the bullet does a lot of damage to a target.

Its outgoing personality and sense of fair play.

The M16 has changed to a degree since the 60′s with the military now issuing the M16A4 (the fourth in the M16 family if you will). The rifle fires the XM193 or .223/5.56x45mm round. this combined with the rotating bolt in the design of the rifle makes for a very low recoiling weapon, making it easier for troops of any size to use. The weapon is also accurate, with iron sights kills have been recorded at 600+ yards and with optics on the weapon (Trijicon ACOG/Aimpoint M3) the rifle, in the right hands is able to kill at 800 yards. It is fairly light, as is the ammunition making it easier to carry. The M16 of the 60′s (M16A1) was notoriously unreliable because the chamber was not chromed, and cleaning was not required which can make any rifle fail after enough time. The weapon has served the military well thus far, and seemingly will continue to do so unless replaced by something better (hasn’t happened yet).

It’s accuracy. A soldier or Marine with minimal training can hit a target out to 500 meters with an M16. Not many other rifles without optic scopes can make that same claim. The AK47 is only effective out to 350 meters.
