Hello!
Well, the Remington 700 Varmint rifle come the closest to a Marine Corps M40 family sniper rifle. The M24, if I remember correctly is a switch barrel rifle firing 7.62 and .300 Win Mag!
The three most recent 7.62 NATO sniper rifles our country has used are the M24, M40 series, and M21.
To meet your requirements of bolt gun and under $500 … is difficult, but you can come closest with the Remington 700 Varmint SPS. Last I heard, you could get it at Cabelas for under $600.
Good luck and good shooting!

Get you a Remington 700, its the civilian version of the M24. Get one chambered for the .308, which is the same round as the 7.62 NATO.

Get a Savage 10FP. They are sub-MOA bolt-action rifles in .308 you can get for around under 500 if you score a decent deal.

all the other answers are correct but you will be a boot so the likely hood that you will use a 7.62 is very unlikely, you most likely use the 5.56×45

The savage and maybe a vanguard. Keep in mind a military type gun would cost you 4-5000.00 with all the special work that goes into building a USMC sniper rifle. They are hand built to exact tolerances and tested to perform precise performance.
You don’t need to practice to qualify at basic level and you will never be a sniper unless you are hand picked after several years of duty and are like in the top.001%……….and they will teach you how to shoot the Military way…so forget what you have learned in civi life.

Look here at these rifles…. These Remington 700 rifles are quite similar to the rifles you may use in the military…..

Both of these rifle are chambered in .308 which is quite similar to the 7.62X51MM cartridge there military counterpart uses…..
Be sure to check out this .308 Cartridge guide….

Look here to learn the difference between the .308 and the 7.62X51MM….

If you want a bolt action rifle chambered in .308 that includes a scope and a bipod then surely look over the Mossberg 100-ATR Night Train… The whole package is about $500 or less….

NO these Mossbergs are not as super accurate as the Remington 700 but they are inexpensive but will get you out there for little money….
Also look over the Stevens Model 200 rifle chambered in .308… These are also an economy rifle that is inexpensive but will get you out there….

Now is not a good time to buy 7.62 because of ammo prices,If you are like me and have to have over 1000 rounds of ammo for every gun you own it could really get expensive,Oh and did I mention you will need a scope also?Good scopes start about a 500$ and go up from there, you can also buy a used scope.Just think about all the money you will have to invest into this rifle. As for preparing for the military, just try to quit smoking(if you do)and start going on runs and getting into shape. As far as BRM goes (Basic Rifle Marksmanship)they would rather have you know nothing about it so they can train you there way.I did a lot of hunting and shooting as a child and teen,I was even really familiar with the AR15 before I went to basic training,I thought I knew everything about shooting and would be the best shooter in my company,I was wrong,I was always getting into trouble for trying to do things the way I was taught, and these habits are hard to brake. So go in knowing nothing and they will teach you everything.Good Luck

Look into a Mosin 91/30. You could buy two of them, a ok scope and mount, and 1,000 rounds for under $500. Just make sure the overall condition and barrel is good (not pitted).
Also, watch Enemy at the Gates. Watching will give you tremendous respect for this fantastic rifle.

1> M1A rifle (modern M14 rifle)
Saiga 308
PTR-91
HK-91 and HK G3 family
M40, M24
Remington 700
Hundreds of sporting/hunting bolt actions
CETME
2> a cheap 7.62 caliber rifle would be the Mosin Nagant. its 7.62x54mmR, one of the several rounds in the 7.62mm caliber. A M-N rifle is between $40 and $100. Ammo you can buy military surplus at $50 per 300. The performance and ballistics is very similar to the 7.62x51mm (.308 NATO) round. the only two differences is .308 is slightly shorter than 7.62x54mmR and 7.62x54mmR is Rimmed while .308 NATO is rimless. There is marginal difference between 7.62x54mmR and 7.62x51mm.
Other 7.62 calibers:
7.62x25mm Tokarev (pistol round)
7.62x33mm (.30 carbine)
7,62x39mm (intermediate rifle)
7.62x51mm (aka .308 NATO)
7.62x54mmR
7.62x63mm (aka .30-06)
7.62x67mm(.300 Winchester Magnum)
