I know the laws there are retarded. I am moving there soon and I was wondering what would make a semi auto rifle called an "assault rifle"

There are three parts of the law that make an "assault rifle" in California.

The first part is if the rifle is on a specific list. The list has 20-plus rifles listed. Examples are Uzis, AR-15s, SKSs, and more. If the rifle is on the list, it is an "assault rifle".

The second part is if the rifle is part of the "series" of rifles that make up the AK and AR family. There are 84 rifles that are specifically listed by manufacturer and model. For example, an Olympic Arms AR-15 is on the list, and is an "assault rifle".

The third part is what other answers include, that there are certain general characteristics that make a rifle an "assault rifle". A rifle is an "assault rifle" if it can accept detachable magazines AND has any of the following: pistol grip, thumbhole stock, folding or telescoping stock, grenade launcher or flare launcher, flash suppressor, or a forward pistol grip. If the rifle has a fixed magazine (you have to load it with stripper clips) that can hold more than 10 rounds, it is an "assault rifle". Finally, if the rifle is under 30 inches in length it is an "assault rifle".

There you go. Doesn’t make any sense, because California law forgets that a select fire mechanism is what makes a true assault rifle, but that’s what we get when our lawmakers make laws about things they have no clue of.

Lets see now, pistol grip, detachable magazine, bayonet lug, and flash hider. You get one of those and none of these, folding stock, collapsible stock, threaded barrel, or magazines over 10 round capacity,

take a Century Arms International imported WASR10/63 rifle. remove the pistol grip and its CA-legal.

the California AW ban is a ban of (mostly) cosmetic features on a firearm.
it applies only to semiautomatic centerfire rifles and carbines, and only to guns not already banned by manufacturer.
you may only have one of the following:
    a pistol grip,
    detachable magazine,
    a bayonet,
    grenade launcher or flash hider.

well the the only different between my California legal WASR10/63 being legal and not legal is the removal of the pistol grip. I do agree that the ban is very stupid. that little pistol grip feature cost me an additional 2 years of searching and $300 extra to buy the rifle.
