It will be an eye opener.
The key to controlling kick is to #1 place the gun properly on your shoulder, right next to the ball joint of your shoulder/arm, NOT on the ball joint itself, and NOT on the upper arm. Think between ball joint and collar bone. #2 pull the gun in TIGHT. If you hold the gun loosly, it will be like a punch, like that old trick of having someone hold their hand just in front of their face and then hit their arm so they smack themselves…but if their hand is actually on their face, hitting their arm will do nothing but push their head, or whole body, back a little bit.

It all depends on the rifle. If it a new one that shoots .233 cal…it barely kicks….now if it’s an old one that shoots the 30.06 cal…well put a little sponge on your shoulder under you shirt to help absorb the impact your shoulder will get when you squeeze the trigger.

The M16 and its variants shoot 5.56×45, a 22 caliber cartridge with minimal recoil. Older US cartridges were the 7.62×51 and before that the 7.62×63 (30-06). Those of us with experience think of these as fairly modest in recoil, but they’ve been known to be off-putting to "rookies." If you pay attention to grandpop’s instructions and use proper technique, you’ll have a good experience. There’s no reason to be wary of the recoil. The rifles won’t hurt you.

I have had 9 year old girls shoot my AR-15′s, the civilian version of the M-16, go through a ton of mags, and have a great fun time for hours.
Most 13 and 14 year old kids can shoot a 308 Win – common military round for the Springfield Armory M1a – and have a good time, but, only up to a box of 20 or so rounds.
The 30-06 M1 Garrand has bit more than the 308 – but still – at your age and body style – you are golden.
Have a good time!

Like someone put their open hand on your shoulder, palm down and then punched the back of their hand. Some military rifles will be a light punch, some will be robust.
The gun’s firing will be a bit of a shock, as you get recoil in the shoulder, the loud explosion and noise and sometimes if a very powerful rifle a shock wave that will rattle your teeth a bit. But it really doesn’t hurt, unless you are a total wimp or have an injury.
Don’t embarrass your grandfather, smile even if it is a bit uncomfortable!
Wear a heavy shirt or a couple of shirts.

If you mean an AR-15 (the civilian version of the M-16), you won’t have much of a problem with recoil. But if you are shooting like an M1 Garand or something more powerful, it has a little more recoil. Still not too bad, but it has some pop to it so you might not want to shoot a WHOLE lots of rounds.

Extex got it rite,I have already shot Military rifles like the M-16 that doesn’t kick much at all.I also shot a M-14 that packs a little bit of a punch compared to the M-16.And then there is the Russian Nagget now that gun kicks. You need to find out what you are shooting to let us know so we can tell you what to expect.

NO problem, you can handle it.* They have a moderate recoil.*

Really depends on the rifle u shoot, the 223 has a kick similar to the .22. If its and older M1 grand you might wanna be ready for some kick. The M1 carbine shoots a .30 cal.It wont kick that bad if ya hold it tight in you shoulder. I don’t think anybody has anything else lower then WW2. But there is an old 50 cal sniper from WW2 that will blow U away. that used it to knock out enemy Panzers and King Tiger tanks.

Without knowing the caliber and style of rifle it is impossible to give you an accurate answer. If it is an AR type in .223/5.56×45 NATO, the recoil is barely discernible but this is not a good hunting round for anything bigger than coyote. If it is a .308/7.62×51 NATO recoil is between 15 and 20 lbs. A .30-06 Springfield will range from 17 to 20.5 lbs. A .30 US M-1 carbine (again not suitable for anything larger than coyote) has less than 4 lbs. of recoil. The 7.62×39 SOVIET has about 7 lbs. of recoil The .303 British about 16 lbs. The 7×57 MAUSER & the 8×57 MAUSER 14 & 13 lbs. of recoil. THAT about covers the common military calibers, so good luck.
On a positive note, you shouldn’t have any problem managing the recoil unless your grandpappy has a rifle chambered for the massive .50 caliber Browning Machine Gun round. Then all I can say is that the recoil will be… Formidable!

Just follow your grandpop’s instructions…he’s going to show you exactly what to do. He loves you…he doesn’t want you to get hurt. You’re going to have a great time shooting with him!

It depends on the cartridge the gun is chambered for. If its a chambered in .223 (AR-15, etc…) its going to be mild. It will mainly feel like a gentle shove on your shoulder, though the gun may jump a bit. If its chambered in 7.62x39mm its going to be about on par with a .30-30, so a modestly hard shove on your shoulder and the gun will jump a bit. If the gun is chambered in .308, .30-06, 7.62x54R, .303 English, or 7.92 Mauser it will have a good bit of recoil and will feel like either a hard shove or a smack on your shoulder and the gun will jump more than either of the preceding calibers.
