When did the US Military stop organizing troops by state?

When did the US Military stop using the state and company system in which everyone was from a particular city, region, or state (ex: 54th Massachusetts, 20th Maine, Missippii Rifles, etc)?

I know in the 19th century everyone fought alongside people from the same state. When did the Army stop using this system?

Many units today are from certain states. i think all the National Guard units are connected to different states.
