I heard it was still being experimented with, but I heard they were going to be issued soon.

the project was put on hold in April 2005, and was formally canceled on October 31, 2005.*
Full paragraph~
The XM8 was a developmental U.S. military designation and project name for a lightweight, assault rifle system that was under development by the United States Army from the late 1990s to early 2000s. The Army worked with the German small arms manufacturer Heckler & Koch (H&K) to develop the system to its requirements in the aftermath of the OICW contract, for which H&K had been a subcontractor to ATK. Although there were high hopes that the XM8 would become the Army’s new standard infantry rifle, the project was put on hold in April 2005, and was formally canceled on October 31, 2005.

The Army is transitioning to the M4 Carbine relatively soon. That’s all I know. The Army generally likes to pick a rifle and stick to it for a while so I don’t know.. Maybe the Marines will get it?

It won’t, the SCAR-H/L versions will be the next rifle to phase out the M4/M16 family. Many of the Rangers in the 75th Ranger Regiment (mainly only E-4 and above) are already being issued the SCAR. The SCAR is the Special Forces Combat Assault Rifle. The SCAR-L fires the standard 5.56x45mm NATO round while the SCAR-H fires the standard 7.62x51mm NATO round. They are very very durable, accurate, light, reliable rifles with little recoil. I would say you could see the US Army using it as standard issues inside 5-10 years.
EDIT: By the way, the 1st Battalion, 75th Ranger Regiment that deployed in April 2009 was the first US Army combat unit equipped with them while in theater.

Never. XM8 failed its OPEVAL and was officially cancelled nearly 5 years ago.

Nope, there are no plans to field the XM8
Currently the Army is not even evaluating any new service rifles.
All test have been canceled.
