Which guns did the US Military consider for replacing the Colt 1911?

December 16th, 2009 by eranio

Anyone remember which guns were part of the 1985 testing to replace the Colt .45 when the US Military switched over to the 9mm cartridge? I know that the Beretta 92FS and the Sig 226 both passed the tests, and Beretta won the contract due to a lower bid. I also know that S&W had an entry, but I can’t remember if there were any others that were considered. Can anyone fill me in?

    Beretta 92SB-F
    Colt SSP
    FN Double Action
    H&K P7M13
    Sig Sauer P226
    Smith & Wesson 459
    Steyr GB
    Walther P88

All were 9mm high capacity auto-loading pistols.

Beretta 92 FS (now Beretta M9 for military speak) and Sig 226. Crappy Beretta one due to lower cost than the SIg. I am sure there were others who entered and washed out. I don’t know about s&w or their model they tried (if they did.)

Virtually all of the major handgun makers had something in the game. It wasn’t just the lower bid that got the contract. The guns first had to pass some fairly stringent testing. Only a couple guns passed all of the tests and only those that passed were allowed to bid. And so we got the Beretta.

Glock also tried at some point but was not awarded a contract because they wouldn’t allow the guns to be made here.

Beretta 92FS.. is 9 mil.. shouldve said screw NATO and keep shooting .45 because those rounds have alot more stopping power than a 9mm.
