Who designs weapons for the military?

November 30th, 2009 by eranio

Who are the people and/or agencies that design weapons for the military?

Does the military have their own individuals who research technology for new potential weapons, or do they buy weapons from an outside source?

Just curious.

The Department of Defense is the largest federal employer of PhD level scientists and engineers in the U.S. Each of the services has its own system of research labs and engineering centers — the largest of these is the Army Research, Development and Engineering Command (RDECOM) headquartered at Aberdeen Proving Ground, Maryland. This is a two-star command, current commander is MajGen Izzo.

Within RDECOM is Army Research Labs which is one of the nation’s largest and best pure science research facilities. It also conducts applied science/research. RDECOM also has seven – nine research, development and engineering centers, each of which has a specialty — missiles, explosives, communications and IT, chemical and biological agents, vehicles, etc.

The Navy has Navy Sea Systems Commands which researches, designs and develops ships. The Air Force has Arnold Labs, etc. The Marine Corps has the Marine Corps Development Center. The Dept of Defense has its own research center known as DARPA.

About 26,000 scientists and engineers work in these facilities.

Contractors build what these individuals develop and design.

The military decides they need a new weapon. They create the specifications and contractors make prototypes to the specs. The weapons are tested and evaluated. The contractor with the best performing weapon and lowest cost wins the contract to build. Or a manufacturer can design a weapon and ask the military to evaluate it for potential prchase

private companies bid for contracts from the Department of Defense such as ratheon, colt, lockheed martin, boeing, bushmaster, barrett, Knight Arms, etc.
