Would medevil weapons still be useful in todays military and police force?

November 26th, 2009 by eranio

In addition to guns and armor would there be any use for equipping some police officers and people in the military with close range weapons like swords and spears?
Do you think if you were in close quarters and an enemy had to draw his weapon you might be able to react faster with a sword. I think that was shown to be somewhat true in the movie the last samurai, but then again those rifles they were using took alot of time to reload.

A very funny question but try to think of this from another angle.

With the bad guys having better fire power than most departments carry with high capacity magazines, what good would a morning star mace, sword or wooden shield do?

This is the prime reason every department has been upgrading the standard sidearms to autos with more firepower for the last 20 years now.

Cute idea, but no, it wouldnt work.

You go fight with a spear or a sword, we’ll see how long you last.

There is very little hand to hand combat anymore.

I think a whack across the head with a good old fashioned mace will calm a suspect down a lot more efectively than pepper spray.

No, because we have guns now. If swords and spears were useful they’d still be in use. Isn’t it obvious?

…no maybe the only practical weapon would be a dagger. Which is almost the same as a knife, which most soldiers carry

I SAY EVERYONE SHOULD MAN UP AND USE THEIR FISTS.

in the vast majority of cases, it’d be pointless.

why bother with a sword/spear when a firearm can kill someone from 100ft away or more, instead of 10ft away.

Also, unless you know how to use it, making a killing/incapacitating blow in one swing with a bladed weapon like a sword or spear is difficult. Just about anyone can kill someone with a firearm, with minimal or no training.

all that said, most modern soldiers still carry combat knives for two main purposes. General utility use, and if they run out of ammunition for their main weapon/sidearms, then having a knife is better than nothing at all.

Also, knives are easier to carry and can actually be more deadly than a sword/spear. (smaller and lighter allows quicker attacks)

    Funny question.

Figure armor would be useless because of armor piercing technologies, so throw that away..

    Remove the guns!

In actuality, Controlling a crowd or riot might go better if the police were equipped with Spears and/or Swords, but would be ineffective if not trained to use them.

Like all police today, they’re not trained well enough with the firearms they do have. Whens the last time you saw a cop go for his billy-club other than his gun? They’re not trained how to use a billy-club either for that matter.

I think we should equip everybody with rocks and garbage can lids. For one, the price of rocks would skyrocket!

But I love your question, I really do. You sound like a thinking person.
